The Umbellata Ficus or as it is often called, the Umbrella Fig Tree, is a popular house plant grown for its large heart-shaped leaves that can grow as large as a dinner plate. Widely grown in Asia, the Umbellata Ficus can grow quite tall, although with simple pruning it can be kept to a more manageable size if required. Originating from Africa, it is no wonder it likes to be kept warm.

Best Locations For Growing Umbellata Ficus

The Umbellata Ficus can be grown in any room as long as it is kept warm, placed away from any cold drafts, and exposed to enough light. Considered mildly toxic, care must be taken when growing it around children or pets.

Umbellata Ficus Sunlight Requirements

For strong and lush growth, the Umbellata Ficus prefers bright, but indirect sunlight. Placing it near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.

Umbellata Ficus Care

Preferring a warm and humid environment, the Umbellata Ficus should be kept at 65 – 85 °F and should be misted regularly. Dead or dying leaves can be removed by cutting at the base of the stem using a pair of clean and sharp scissors. The foliage of this plant can tend to bend towards the light; to avoid this, turn the plant by 90 degrees every week.

Watering Umbellata Ficus

From spring until the fall, the Umbellata Ficus will generally require watering on a weekly basis. In winter, watering can be reduced as the growth slows down. This ficus is sensitive to over-watering and should be watered only when the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil are dry. To avoid waterlogged roots, allow any excess water to drain away freely from the container after watering.

Feeding Umbellata Ficus

During the growing season, a balanced houseplant fertilizer can be applied every four weeks to encourage lush and strong growth.
