Growing Zones
Agave americana ‘Variegata’ brings crisp, modern drama to sun-soaked spaces. Broad blue-green leaves edged in creamy yellow form a striking, architectural rosette that reads like living sculpture. Tough, slow-growing, and undeniably bold, it makes high-impact design refreshingly low effort.
Use it to anchor gravel beds, punctuate xeriscapes, or lend strong lines to patios and entryways. Its clean color contrast pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, cacti, and dark pottery for an instant, magazine-worthy look.
Variegated Americana Agave Care
Give 6–10 hours of direct sun. Plant in fast-draining, gritty soil (cactus/succulent mix or sandy loam) and avoid water-retentive clay unless heavily amended with coarse material. Water deeply but infrequently: outdoors every 3–4 weeks in hot weather, far less in cool seasons; in containers, wait until the mix is completely dry. Do not allow water to collect at the crown.
Feed lightly once in spring with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Remove spent or damaged leaves with gloves and eye protection. Hardy to about 15–20°F; best in USDA zones 8–11. Monocarpic (flowers once after many years, then offsets carry on). Caution: sharp terminal spines and toothed leaf edges—site away from play areas and narrow paths.
Variegated Americana Agave Spacing
For a specimen, allow 6–8 feet of horizontal clearance from walls, walks, and neighboring plants to showcase the mature rosette. For massing, space 5–6 feet on center.
Keep at least 4 feet from seating or high-traffic paths. In containers, start with an 18–24 inch pot with ample drainage; size up to 24–30 inches as roots fill. Elevate pots on risers or feet to prevent waterlogging.
Why Grow Variegated Americana Agave?
- Vibrant, gold-edged foliage that delivers instant contrast
- Architectural form that elevates modern and desert designs
- Extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance once established
- Naturally deer and rabbit resistant; offsets offer easy propagation
Make a crisp, desert-chic statement with a nearly hands-off succulent. ‘Variegata’ brightens sunny, lean sites with glowing gold margins and a sculptural rosette season after season.
