Variegated Americana Agave makes its impact with bold striped foliage and a sculptural rosette that needs very little water once established. Agave americana 'Marginata' grows thick, sword-like gray-green leaves edged in creamy yellow, creating a large evergreen succulent that can reach about 5 to 6 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide. Each leaf has hooked margins and a sharp terminal spine, so this plant brings structure with a built-in sense of distance. We use it where a garden needs a strong focal point that can handle heat, dry soil, and reflected sun.
This Mexico native is a slow-growing perennial succulent suited to xeriscapes, modern gardens, Mediterranean-style plantings, and large containers. It is extremely drought tolerant once rooted, generally deer resistant, and adaptable to coastal or dry inland sites when drainage is sharp. Mature plants may send up a tall green-yellow flower stalk after many years, then the original rosette declines while offsets continue the planting. Its clean color contrast pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, cacti, and dark pottery for an instant, magazine-worthy look.
Variegated Americana Agave Care
Plant Variegated Americana Agave in full sun to partial shade, with the cleanest variegation developing in strong light. It needs fast-draining sandy, gravelly, or succulent-style soil, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.5 to 7.0. Avoid rich, wet garden soil, especially in winter, because excess moisture is the most common cause of root rot.
Water deeply but infrequently during warm weather, letting the soil dry thoroughly before watering again. In winter dormancy, reduce watering sharply, especially in containers or climates with cool nights. Fertilize lightly once in spring with a low-nitrogen cactus or succulent fertilizer, and do not force fast growth on this naturally slow plant.
Remove only dead or damaged leaves at the base, using gloves and eye protection around the spines. Offsets can be separated and replanted when they are large enough to handle, which is useful because the main rosette is monocarpic and dies after flowering. In zone 8 or during unusual cold, protect young plants from prolonged freezes and keep the crown dry through winter weather.
Variegated Americana Agave Spacing
Space Variegated Americana Agave 6 to 10 feet from other large plants, walls, and traffic areas so the mature rosette can spread safely. Place it away from walkways, drive edges, and play areas so the spines do not catch clothing or skin. Pair it with lavender, rosemary, yarrow, or ice plants in sunny, low-water beds where sharp drainage and heat tolerance fit the whole planting.
Use a heavy 20- to 25-gallon container or larger for patio growing, with drainage holes and a gritty succulent mix.
