Feature
Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as the String of Hearts, is a stunning trailing succulent that looks like a drama queen but is really one of the easiest plants to grow. Its long, delicate stems are adorned with miniature heart-shaped leaves in captivating shades of pink, cream, and green, cascading gracefully from their container. When left unpruned, this charming plant can grow up to 9 feet.
Native to South Africa, it thrives in bright light and warm temperatures but does not require high humidity levels. Place the String of Hearts in any location that receives at least 3-4 hours of bright light daily.
Best Locations For Growing Variegated String of Hearts
The String of Hearts is best showcased in a hanging basket or on a shelf, allowing its lovely tendrils to spill and trail freely. Growing it in a humid environment, such as a bathroom or kitchen, can enhance its growth and may even reduce the frequency of watering. While bright natural light is preferred, broad-spectrum LED or fluorescent grow lights can be used when natural light is insufficient. This succulent is considered non-toxic, making it safe for homes with pets and children.
Variegated String of Hearts Sunlight Requirements
Bright indirect light is optimal for growing the String of Hearts. This level of sunlight supports vibrant foliage without risking sunburn during the hottest part of the day. An east-facing window that receives direct morning sunlight is ideal. If natural light is not available, a grow light can be utilized for up to 12 hours a day.
Variegated String of Pearls Care
When potting your String of Hearts, choose a lightweight indoor potting mix with added perlite, vermiculite, or orchid bark to ensure an airy texture. Succulents cannot tolerate wet roots for extended periods, so select pots with excellent drainage to prevent overwatering.
Regular and strategic pruning of the long stems encourages a denser, fuller appearance. As a bonus, you can root the cuttings in a glass of water to expand your plant collection.
Watering Variegated String of Hearts
Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings for best results. Check weekly to see if the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry before watering. Always empty any saucers or decorative cache pots of excess water to prevent roots from sitting in soggy soil. In winter, reduce the watering frequency to once every 10-14 days. Signs of underwatering include thinning, curling, or browning leaves. While average indoor humidity levels are acceptable, these succulents can tolerate more humid environments to accommodate moisture-loving plants such as Aroids and ferns.
Feeding Variegated String of Hearts
String of Hearts benefits from light fertilization during spring and summer, when growth is most active. Select a diluted liquid feed for houseplants with a balanced NPK ratio, and apply it once a month. No fertilization is necessary during the fall and winter months.
