Watering Magnolia Tree

Water is an important part of caring for Magnolia trees, especially young plants. These trees prefer evenly moist soil. They can happily live in hot conditions, but they have shallow root systems that can dry out quickly. Established Magnolias are somewhat drought tolerant, but learning when the tree needs water and how to identify a thirsty tree enables you to care for your trees properly.

How To Tell If Magnolia Tree Needs Watered

Rainfall is often enough to support mature Magnolia trees and high temperatures cause water to evaporate more quickly. Monitor rainfall and temperature to gauge when a Magnolia tree is likely to need water. Water the tree after an extended hot and dry period. The soil will appear dry and cracked when the tree is dehydrated.

How Often To Water Magnolia Tree

Newly planted Magnolia trees need water two to three times per week. Drench the soil around the tree to saturate the entire root ball. Young trees need a consistent water schedule for the first one to two growing seasons.

Established Magnolia trees need water weekly. Rainfall is often enough to support mature trees, especially in climates with regular summer rain. Provide supplemental water during a dry spell. Magnolia trees can be overwatered and will experience leaf drop if drainage is poor and the soil stays saturated.

Potted Magnolia trees need water when the top few inches of potting mix are dry. Feel the soil to gauge the dryness. Container plants generally need water a few times a week.

Best Time To Water Magnolia Tree

Early mornings are generally the best time to water Magnolia trees. Watering early ensures the tree is hydrated before the peak afternoon sun hits. Any time the tree shows signs of dehydration is the best time to give it a drink, but try to water it in the morning when possible to slow evaporation.

How to Water Magnolia Tree

Step 1 - Inspect the tree and the soil.

Look for dry, cracked soil or signs the tree is experiencing water stress.

Step 2 - Saturate the ground around the base of the tree.

Continue to water until the ground is completely wet and water slowly drains through the top layer of soil.

Step 3 - Water the entire root zone.

Magnolia tree roots are shallow and wide, so water a wide area around the trunk.

Step 4 - Apply a thick layer of mulch around the tree's base.

Cover the root system with mulch, but avoid placing mulch directly against the trunk. The mulch will keep the soil from drying out as quickly.
