Feature
The White Princess Philodendron has some of the most unique and exciting variegation. Spade-shaped leaves are dark green with light green and white accents. The variegation is random and unique to each leaf, but often, a leaf will have an expanse of white on one side that perfectly follows the midrib. Large swaths of white stand out and make this rare houseplant a natural focal point. The Philodendron erubescens is a self-heading Philodendron with an upright growth habit that benefits from a moss pole or trellis.
Best Locations For Growing White Princess Philodendron
The White Princess Philodendron will flourish in a sunny spot with increased humidity. Young plants look lovely on a desk or mantle, while larger trellised plants may be a better fit for a plant stand. Choose a spot away from drafts and heating or cooling vents.
Philodendrons are poisonous to people and animals, so keep the White Princess Philodendron away from curious little ones or pets, especially if they have a history of handling plants.
White Princess Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Bright sunlight is a must for the White Princess Philodendron. Lots of sunlight brings out the variegation and intensifies the white against the green. A window with southern exposure and a sheer curtain to diffuse the light is preferred, although a position close to a west-facing window is also sufficient. Direct sunlight may burn the foliage, while too little light may result in leggy growth with limited variegation. Dialing in the light always matters, but it’s even more critical for a rare variegated plant like the White Princess Philodendron.
White Princess Philodendron Care
Trim this Philodendron to remove damaged leaves or maintain a bushy form. Allow the plant to climb a trellis or moss pole, so the foliage will be fully displayed. Repot your White Princess Philodendron every one to two years. Prioritize repotting a root-bound plant and select a new container one to two inches wider. This plant prefers rich, moist, and slightly acidic potting soil that promotes drainage.
Watering White Princess Philodendron
Philodendrons like damp conditions, but wet, soggy soil is not good. Feel the soil and water your plant when the top few inches of potting mix are dry. Empty the tray or outer pot of runoff after watering so water is not reabsorbed into the soil. Water every week to a week and a half in the spring and summer. Philodendrons need water less often in the fall and winter.
Average humidity is acceptable for most Philodendrons, although these tropical plants prefer some extra dampness in the air. Brown patches along the leaf edges indicate the humidity is too low. The White Princess Philodendron is a showy and rare plant that will look its best when it lives in increased humidity.
Feeding White Princess Philodendron
Fertilize monthly to promote new growth and a full form. Use plant food with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10 or something similar because it supports balanced growth. A water-soluble fertilizer is easy to use and safe for the plant. Maintain a regular fertilizing schedule when the Philodendron is actively growing. Stop fertilizing when growth slows or stops in the fall and winter.
