The color of this hybrid Iris is stunning and subdued all at the same time. Brownish-peach petals have dark purple veining. Iris pseudata is a cross between the Japanese Iris (Iris ensata) and the native Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus) which makes this lovely Iris perfect for wet gardens near a pond or in the damp zone of a rain garden. While in bloom, Pseudata Iris attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. After blooming, the arrow straight green foliage is a nice contrast to late season blooming perennials.

Yarai Pseudata Iris is happiest where it can have damp soil and full sun. It can also be kept happy in average draining soil if extra irrigation is available. Iris pseudata have few pests or diseases to worry about. Deer and rabbit resistant. This Iris looks best when it is planted in a large grouping with other Iris that have different blooming times. This will prolong the season of interest throughout the summer.

Yarai Pseudata Iris Care

All Iris appreciate a shallow planting that exposes the top ⅓ of their rhizome roots. This ensures good blooming and less chance of the Iris being bothered by root rot issues. Fertilizing is best done after the blooms finish. A balanced, slow release fertilizer is best. The soil pH ranges from 6.0 -7.0, in the neutral zone. Soil texture can be on the heavy side with a fair amount  of clay to help hold in moisture. Garden soil on the sandy side will benefit from a layer of compost with lots of organic material to help hold in moisture.

Deadheading of the spent blooms is all that Iris Pseudata needs during the summer to keep them looking good. Early spring is the time to clean up foliage growth from the previous year, just as the new growth behind to emerge. If plants are cut back in the colder of the hardiness zones, there is a risk that winter snow will damage the crowns.

Yarai Pseudata Iris Spacing

Iris Pseudata is a winner as either a specimen plant in the cottage garden or planted in mass drifts in a rain garden. This Iris is 2-3 feet in height with a spread of up to 4 feet. When used in the cottage garden it appreciates some elbow room. Any plant planted near it should be spaced at least 30 inches, center on center. When planting many together the spacing should be 30-40 inches on center.
