Create a privacy screen, define a space, or enjoy year-round color thanks to the Chapel View Japanese Cedar, also known as Cryptomeria Japonica 'PIICJ-I’. The broad pyramidal growth habit is full and dense, allowing this tree to shield a yard or patio space or function as a focal point in a landscape. Mature trees reach 5 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. The blue-green needles maintain their hue all year, providing color in a bleak winter landscape but also offering consistent color throughout the year.

This tree is an evergreen conifer native to Japan. Grow the Chapel View Japanese Cedar in zones 6 through 9. While named a cedar, it is actually a cypress tree. Japanese cedars require some routine care when first planted, but established trees need minimal attention. This tree is relatively disease resistant, but they are susceptible to fungal diseases, so ensure air can circulate around the branches and the soil drains freely.

Chapel View Japanese Cedar Care

This tree is adaptable and can live in full sun to part shade, although it grows best with at least 6 hours of daily sunlight. Trees can reach up to 10 feet tall, so avoid planting this tree underneath power lines or too close to buildings or tall trees. The soil should be moist, rich, and slightly acidic. Feed the tree annually using a slow-release fertilizer for conifers in late winter or early spring. Young trees need regular water for the first year, but mature trees demonstrate drought tolerance.

Prune Japanese cedars in the mid to late spring. Remove crossed branches and pinch back growth to encourage a bushier form. Japanese cedars are sensitive to pruning, so choose a day with mild weather to avoid overstressing the plant. Dead or damaged branches can be removed at any time of year, but refrain from shaping the tree during the winter when it is dormant.

Protect Japanese cedar from cold winter weather for the first two years by wrapping the plant in landscape fabric. Established trees do not need winter protection.

Chapel View Japanese Cedar Spacing

Space Chapel View Japanese cedars 3 to 4 feet apart from other plants and at least 4 feet away from buildings. Proper spacing allows air to flow around the branches and needles, preventing fungal diseases.
