- Use As A Filler In Containers
Add a little spice to your late summer containers and planters with Acapulco™ Multicolored Ornamental Peppers. A rainbow of striking peppers covers this tender perennial for many weeks in late summer, just when other summer annuals may be reaching the end of their journey. The upright-growing peppers are easy to see amongst the dense foliage, allowing this plant to be either a thriller or filler in deck and patio planters. Although ornamental peppers are edible, the flavor of Acapulco™ Multicolored is flat with minimal spiciness. The fruits are great for use in flower arrangements or drying for indoor arrangements throughout the winter.
Capsicum annuum ‘Acapulco™ Multicolor’ has an ultra-compact shape, perfect for growing in containers to decorate hot sunny decks, patios, or balconies. Use it as a filler plant to replace tired early summer annuals in baskets and planters, or grow it on its own as a houseplant that can be grown outdoors during the summer. Ornamental peppers are hybrid cultivars.
Acapulco™ Multicolor Ornamental Pepper Care
Acapulco™ Multicolor Ornamental Pepper grows best in a container or hanging basket where it will receive consistent watering and full sun. Bring your plant outdoors for the summer after the nighttime temperatures consistently reach 50 degrees F or higher. Ornamental peppers do not tolerate even light frosts. Plants also need to be brought indoors in the late summer when the nighttime temperatures begin to fall below 55 degrees F.
Use a peat-free potting mix and a container with excellent drainage when potting up your ornamental pepper. Apply a diluted liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to support continued blooming and fruiting. A formula for tomato plants is ideal and will contain the correct ratio of nutrients to support both root development and heavy flowering. Look for NPK numbers similar to 1-3-1.
Ornamental peppers make great short-term houseplants (often only growing for 1-2 years) to brighten up your house during the long months of winter. Place the pot in direct sun for continued flowers and fruit development. A south-facing window is ideal, although a southwest or west-facing window is acceptable. Water when the top 1-2 inches of potting mix are dry to the touch. Stop fertilizing once the plant is brought indoors, and resume feeding when new growth appears in the spring. Remove yellowed or brown foliage and any pepper fruits as they die back. This not only keeps the plant looking neat, but it will stimulate more growth.
Acapulco™ Multicolor Ornamental Pepper Spacing
Acapulco™ Multicolor Ornamental Pepper stays compact and does not grow larger than 6-8 inches tall or wide. Plants require a pot with at least a 6-inch diameter when grown alone. Add 3 plants to a 10-inch hanging basket or large planter.
