English Lavender is a long-season, blooming perennial, perfect for container or garden growing. The Annet variety has deep blue flowers that seem to last on the shrub for weeks throughout the summer. The fragrant flowers are the main attraction for many native pollinators, while the slightly savory taste of the foliage makes a wonderful stand-in for rosemary in most culinary creations. Lavendula agustifolia ‘Annet’ should be high on the list for any ornamental or edible garden plan.
Lavender may attract plenty of beneficial insects but foraging mammals, such as deer, rabbits, voles, moles, and squirrels, completely avoid it due to its fragrance. Lavender planted in a dry and sunny position will thrive with little maintenance needed. Add the low profile of Annet English Lavender to the front of a dry garden bed, create a scented hedge alongside a walkway, or use potted plants as tabletop decor for an outdoor seating area.
Annet English Lavender Care
Average, well-draining garden soil is ideal for growing strong and vigorous lavender plants. Position plants in full sun (at least 6 hours a day) and water only when the soil dries 2-3 inches from the surface. Lavender rarely requires fertilizing for healthy growth or flowering. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are the best way to provide supplemental watering while keeping the foliage dry.
Annet English Lavender does not need long days or nights to bloom and continues to flower late into the summer. Harvesting the flower stems for drying is best done when just over half of the flowers have opened. This ensures the best color and fragrance for your dried arrangement. The easiest way to harvest flower stems is to shear the plants back to just below the new growth, which promotes a nicely mounded shape. Shearing by mid-summer may encourage a second flush of flowers late in the summer. In the spring, shear back any spent growth to just above where the stems become woody.
Annet English Lavender Spacing
Annet English Lavender reaches a mature height and width of 16-18 inches. Space plants 12-16 inches apart when planting en masse or amongst existing perennials and shrubs. Choose a container with at least a 10-inch diameter.
