Apollo Orange Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica 'Apollo Orange') dazzles with clusters of bright orange and yellow flowers, creating a stunning display from late spring through autumn. This upright perennial reaches 2 to 3 feet in height, making it ideal for adding vertical interest to garden beds and containers. Its bright hues not only beautify your outdoor space but also attract essential pollinators, especially monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. Unlike some native species, Apollo Orange grows rapidly and blooms continuously, making it a reliable choice for a long-lasting summer garden.
This tropical milkweed thrives in full sun and handles heat and drought with ease. Its columnar, mounded growth habit complements mixed borders, butterfly gardens, and informal meadow plantings. The slender, medium-green leaves provide an attractive contrast to its tropical blooms, and the plant's sap deters deer and pests. Though native to regions like Central and South America, it adapts well to temperate climates as an annual. Perfect for cut flower arrangements, its blooms also have an extended vase life, adding charm indoors.
Apollo Orange Milkweed Care
Apollo Orange Milkweed grows well in well-drained sandy or loamy soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Plant it in full sun for optimal flowering, as partial shade can reduce bloom production. Water consistently during its early growth period, then only when the top inch of soil dries out. In hot climates, this plant appreciates regular deep watering to prevent stress. Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season using a balanced fertilizer at half the recommended strength on the label to promote lush foliage and plentiful flowers.
To encourage a bushier shape, pinch back young stems early in the season. Deadheading spent blooms prolongs the flowering period. At the end of the season, cut the plant to the ground to prevent overwintering parasites that can harm monarchs. If grown in containers, bring the plant indoors during colder months and place it in a bright location.
Apollo Orange Milkweed Spacing
Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings and borders to allow airflow and prevent overcrowding. In container plantings, choose a pot at least 12 inches wide to accommodate the plant’s deep root system.
