Apricot Coral Bells colors shade gardens with scalloped foliage that shifts from apricot-orange to pink and deeper burnt orange as the season moves on. Heuchera villosa 'Apricot' forms a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen mound about 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide. Rosy pink bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage in late spring to early summer, drawing hummingbirds and butterflies. This plant is stunning in porch containers because the leaf color holds attention long after the flowers finish.
Heuchera villosa is a species native to much of the eastern United States, often found in rocky woods, shaded ledges, and moist crevices. Villosa hybrids are especially useful in humid southern gardens compared with many older heucheras. Apricot Coral Bells is deer resistant, juglone tolerant, coastal tolerant, and suitable for cut flower stems when the airy bloom sprays are open. Plant it in shade borders, woodland edges, rock gardens, containers, low edging, and mixed perennial beds that need warm foliage color.
Apricot Coral Bells Care
Plant Apricot Coral Bells in part sun to part shade, with afternoon shade best for protecting the apricot foliage in hot climates. It grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with good organic content. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal, though good drainage is more important than a narrow pH range.
Water deeply after planting to saturate the planting site. Keep the soil evenly moist while the roots establish the first season. Established plants tolerate short dry spells, but foliage looks fuller with steady moisture during heat and dry weather. Fertilize in spring with compost or a balanced slow-release perennial fertilizer. Avoid wet winter soil, since excess moisture around the crown can lead to crown rot.
Remove faded flower stalks after bloom to keep the mound clean. Trim away tired or winter-damaged leaves in early spring as new growth appears. Divide clumps every few years in spring or early fall if the crown rises above the soil or the plant begins to lose vigor.
Apricot Coral Bells Spacing
Space Apricot Coral Bells 12 to 18 inches apart for edging, mass plantings, or shaded borders. Allow 18 to 24 inches between plants when mixing it with larger perennials. For containers, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with drainage holes, and keep the potting mix evenly moist but never saturated.
In part-shade beds, combine Apricot Coral Bells with astilbe and barrenwort where rich soil, filtered light, and steady moisture suit all three. Let Japanese forest grass arc nearby, setting off the warm coral bells foliage with fine texture and a softer habit. In containers, use begonias or coleus for seasonal color around the heuchera and position the planting in bright shade.
