A lover of sun and heat, Lantana Bandana Pink (Lantana camara) can add whirls of tiny pink and flowers to any garden container or bed. Lantanas are popular annuals because they bloom right from planting time through the first frost. The round blooms are formed by clusters of tiny flowers that start out as yellow buds and turn into bubblegum pink stunners.
If that’s not enough, lantana leaves are rich green and fragrant, with a nearly citrus scent. The plants attract butterflies, birds, and hummingbirds. They can handle drought and plenty of heat. At 12 to 26 inches high and about 2 feet wide, the colorful Lantana Bandana Pink can play the thriller role in any summer container. It also can stand out in the landscape as a focal plant or to form a low border or rock garden plant, especially in the hottest zones, where lantana can come back as a perennial and grow into a shrub.
Bandana Pink Lantana Care
Place your Lantana Bandana Pink where it can get at least 6 hours of sun a day. Give it average water until it gets established, and it can handle brief periods of drought later in the summer. Water container-grown lantanas a little more often. This is a tough plant that thrives in heat and usually needs no deadheading or other pruning once planted. You can trim the plant back to give it the desired shape or encourage additional branches. Lantanas grown as perennials (in the hottest regions) can be pruned any time of year, with the hardest pruning for shape taking place in spring.
Add some compost to the soil at planting time to give your lantana a good start. You can fertilize the plant as needed or top dress it with compost. If container-grown lantanas are not flowering well, give them a midsummer boost with some flower fertilizer. In warmer regions, bring a potted lantana indoors before frost and trim it back. Keep the plant out of direct sunlight until spring. Be aware that lantanas can be toxic to pets.
Bandana Pink Lantana Spacing
Most lantanas grow in a mounding habit, so give Lantana Bandana Pink about 12 to 24 inches between plants for room to grow. If planting it as a container thriller, be sure not to block the plant with any filler that grows higher than about 10 inches.
