A single pot delivers a sunset of color when the Blended Family Combination goes to work. Ruffled burgundy‑chocolate leaves rimmed in electric chartreuse from ColorBlaze Wicked Witch coleus push upward as the thriller, salmon‑orange Campfire Flame bidens fill the mid‑layer with daisy wheels from late spring through fall, and plush, lime‑yellow Lemon Coral sedum spills over the rim like seafoam. The trio tops out around a foot tall, cascades nearly two feet, and keeps that hot palette glowing from the moment you plant until frost.
Heat‑born in Mexico and Australia, these Proven Winners selections shrug off high temperatures, short dry spells, and hungry deer. Bidens lures bees, coleus prefers to show off its foliage, and the sedum adds drought‑proof texture, so the recipe works in patio tubs, hanging baskets, balcony boxes, or front‑border pockets. Wicked Witch has an upright habit, Campfire is mounded, and Lemon Coral trails—thriller, filler, spiller all in one pack.
Blended Family Combination Care
Choose a 14‑ to 16‑inch container with a drainage hole and fill it with lightweight, peat‑free potting mix blended with a slow‑release fertilizer. Set the pot where it receives four to eight hours of direct sun; morning light plus dappled afternoon shade keeps the coleus colors richest. Water when the top inch of soil dries, letting excess drain away; feed every other week with water‑soluble plant food to keep bidens flowering hard. Pinching coleus tips once in midsummer thickens the crown, while bidens and sedum drop spent petals and needles on their own.
Coleus can winter indoors near a bright window, functioning as a foliage houseplant until spring returns, and Lemon Coral acts as a tender perennial in Zones 7‑11. In most climates the whole combo is replanted each year, yet cuttings of coleus root quickly in water if you’d like to save pieces before frost.
Blended Family Combination Spacing
For one lush, finished container, plant one coleus liner in the center, tuck the bidens just off center, and slide the sedum to the rim; all three root balls fit comfortably in a 14‑inch pot. If you’re upsizing to an 18‑inch patio bowl, double the sedum to two liners for a thicker skirt. Plant groupings in the landscape 18 inches apart so mounds meet by midsummer without crowding. Use at least a two‑gallon pot—bigger is better—as the final root mass fills space quickly.
