Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs deliver deep blue-purple spring color with a perfume that makes a small planting feel generous. Hyacinthus orientalis 'Blue Jacket' produces dense flower spikes with darker blue centers and paler edges on compact 8- to 12-inch stems. The color is easy to blend with pink, white, yellow, and purple spring plantings, which makes this one of the more useful hyacinths for mixed displays. Our favorite placement is near a front step or garden gate, where the fragrance reaches visitors before the flowers do.

This award-winning heirloom has been grown since the 1950s and remains popular for both outdoor planting and indoor forcing. Hyacinths flower early to mid-spring, with each bulb forming a tidy spike above short, strap-like foliage. Rabbits and deer usually avoid hyacinths, and the bulbs are well suited to containers, border fronts, rock gardens, and small clusters along walkways. Their first spring display is typically the fullest, while later years often have a looser, more relaxed flower form.

Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs Care

Plant Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, giving them at least a half day of spring light for strong flowering. Choose well-drained, organically enriched soil, such as loam or sandy loam, and avoid low pockets where water collects. Hyacinths tolerate slightly acidic soil but perform best in neutral to slightly alkaline soil, around pH 6.5 to 7.5.

After planting, water deeply so the soil closes around the bulb and root growth can begin before winter. During spring growth, the soil should stay lightly moist, but the planting should never feel muddy when pressed between your fingers. Fertilize in fall as roots are forming, or in early spring when leaf tips break the soil, using a slow-release bulb food. Once bloom has passed, allow the bed to dry gradually as the foliage fades and the bulbs enter summer rest.

Wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs because the skins may irritate sensitive skin. Clip spent flower spikes after the florets fade, but leave the leaves until they yellow and collapse on their own. For indoor forcing, chill potted bulbs for 12 to 14 weeks, then move them to bright, cool conditions once white roots are visible through the drainage holes.

Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs Spacing

Set Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches apart in garden beds, with the pointed end facing upward. For a fuller spring pot, choose a 10- to 12-inch container with drainage holes and place bulbs close together, just shy of touching. Use a loose potting mix, water well after planting, and keep the container cool until growth begins.

In containers, pair Blue Jacket Hyacinth Bulbs with pansies, primrose, or alyssum for low flowers that let the blue spikes stay prominent. Along a garden edge, irises add upright foliage after the hyacinths bloom, while coral bells cover the front of the bed with foliage color as the bulb leaves fade. For part-shade borders, hellebores and ferns make suitable neighbors because they appreciate spring moisture but do not require wet summer soil.
