Dwarf pines are always a great addition to a garden. They can add lots of texture and structure. Blue Shag White Pine definitely will add texture. The surprisingly soft, long needles ask to be touched. Large whorls of needles held on compact branches that have a more tidy habit than the species White Pine. This is a slow grower that would be at home in either the garden bed or a container.
Pinu strobus is a conifer evergreen that is very slow to reach its full size of 2-4 feet tall x 2-4 feet wide. The shape of the bunched branches give it a lovely mounded look that contrasts with broadleaf evergreens or deciduous shrubs. Blue Shag White Pine only puts on 4 inches of growth per year, which means that very little maintenance is needed to keep it looking its best.
Blue Shag White Pine Care
Blue Shag Prefers an acidic soil under 6.5pH , An average textured soil is best, but this conifer will tolerate a heavy clay as well. Blue Shag will tolerate salt spray if planted in coastal seaside spots. Extra irrigation is only needed in extremely hot spells. A mulch of leaves or organic compost helps to keep this plant fed and cool during the summer. The favored position for Pinus is full sun, but this dwarf variety will tolerate a sheltered spot with either morning or late afternoon shade.
Pruning is rarely needed for dwarf conifers. The natural growth habit is very dense and mounded and very slow. It will take 10 or more years for this shrub to reach its mature size. Fertilizing is rarely required. A mulch with organic compost or leaves in the fall is all that is needed.
Blue Shag White Pine Spacing
Spacing when first planting this conifer is very important. A spacing of 4-5 feet on center is best. This will allow the White Pine to fully grow into its mature shape without being cramped. Proper spacing also ensures enough air circulation around this plant. A container of at least 18 inches diameter is needed if you are growing this specimen in a pot.
