The Buttons Gardenia is a prolific bloomer that provides a lot of visual interest and sweetly scented flowers in a compact package. Buds burst open to reveal pure white double blooms. The lovely flowers of Gardenia jasminoides 'Buttons' adorn the plant from summer through fall. The flowers are beautiful, but the sweet scent of the blooms takes this plant to the next level. Ovate, glossy deep green foliage, has smooth, rounded edges and is dense, filling in the plant and giving it a full form.
The compact size is ideal for containers or mixed beds with limited space. Since the Buttons Gardenia doesn’t get very big, it is perfect for gardeners who want the look and fragrance of a Gardenia without the effort necessary to maintain a large shrub. The compact Buttons Gardenia also works well alongside other Gardenia varieties and should be planted toward the front of the grouping.
Buttons Gardenia Care
Plant the Buttons Gardenia in full sun to partial shade. Give this plant fertile, moist soil with good drainage. The Buttons Gardenia has medium water needs, but container plants will need water when the top few inches of potting mix are dry. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture. Fertilize the plant using a plant food for acid-loving evergreens to keep the flowers blooming throughout the summer.
Move container plants to a protected area for the winter. Prune landscape plants in late summer after the flowers fade. Remove leggy branches and cut growth back by one-third to encourage a full, bushy form in the spring.
Buttons Gardenia Spacing
The Buttons Gardenia is a dwarf variety with a compact form. Mature shrubs reach 2 feet tall and wide. Space shrub 2 feet apart for a continuous planting or feature one plant in a 12-inch container.
