All rosemary varieties are edible, but Chef’s Choice was selected for its high oil content and slightly spicy flavor. As a bonus, Chef’s Choice grows compactly, fitting into kitchen and herb gardens, a patio planter, and as a very “ornamedible” in the mixed border of the garden. Chef’s Choice is a nice manageable two feet by two feet, unlike varieties that swallow your border in no time.

Chef’s Choice, aka Rosemary officinalis ‘Roman Beauty,’ offers evergreen foliage with a fine- needled texture and violet-blue flowers that delight pollinators including bees, birds, and butterflies. It is also deer- and drought-resistant and cold-hardy to zone 8 (about 10 to 20 degrees F). In the garden, it can be an easy-care groundcover, or even a low hedge, perhaps edging the kitchen garden.

Chef's Choice Rosemary Care

Rosemary plants like full sun, great drainage, and appropriate winter temperatures (above 20 degrees Fahrenheit). If your garden is zone 8-adjacent, consider protecting with mulch, row cover fabric, or sitting in a toasty microclimate, like against a south or west-facing wall. They can handle heat, salt and, once established after the first year or two in the garden, even drought.

Not heavy feeders, you should be able to supply Chef’s Choice’s needs by applying some compost, aged cow manure, or slow-release fertilizer at planting and then in successive springs. The ideal time to prune for shaping is right after flowering.

Chef's Choice Rosemary Spacing

Two feet apart is a nice spacing for your Chef’s Choice Rosemary, although you can go closer for a hedge, knot garden, or on the edge of a large container with other plants.

    A little...

Posted by Susan green on May 03, 2021

Plants took over a month to arrive, and only did so after I emailed the company to check the status. They were timely in their reply. The plants I ordered were supposed to be much taller than what arrived. For the price I paid, I was disappointed and could have saved money by purchasing at local nursery/hardware store. Won’t be ordering again. Sorry.

    I love rosemary

Posted by Jamel Hines on Apr 21, 2020

I use rosemary when grilling steaks and also when I make a special whiskey cocktail. So wanted to grow my own, so I didn't have to buy it from the grocery store all the time.

    its still alive

Posted by Brittani from Florida on Mar 28, 2019

I waited a few months to do a review on this plant, because I can never keep rosemary alive. I ordered that last fall, and kept up with it all winter. So far the plant is still alive and has actually grown quite a bit. I love using rosemary to grill steaks with, so figured having fresh rosemary at home all the time was a must!
