Elegant and abundant with beautiful blooms, Chionoides Rhododendron brings a light and dreamy look to outdoor spaces. This white-flowering shrub blooms in clusters in late spring, around the end of May. The narrow- leafed and rich-colored foliage accompanies the white petals and yellow center of the flowers in a way that allows the blooms to stand out in space. The flowers on these shrubs can hold up to a dozen blooms on each stem. Rhododendron cat. Chionoides are often found in asian and zen themed gardens, but also offer a subtle look to cottage styled outdoor spaces.
Rhododendron cat. Chionoides is just one of the 1,000 species of rhododendrons that are native to northern temperate areas containing moist and acidic soil found in the Himalayas all the way into areas of Southeast Asia. So, it is important to note that the Chionoides Rhododendron requires most and well-drained soil. Growing from 4 to 5 feet in height and spreading from 5 to 6 feet across, the shrubby evergreen is a wonderful addition to many garden spaces. Chionoides Rhododendron is very low maintenance and does best in areas with partial sun or full shade. Because of Chionoides Rhododendron being an evergreen with such profound green-colored foliage, you can use this plant as borders or hedges to bring a distinguished and graceful look to your outdoor area.
Chionoides Rhododendron Care
Rhododendron cat. Chionoides is low maintenance and does well when placed in shady areas with scattered sunlight. Watering can be done weekly or more often when facing extreme heat in order to maintain moist soil for the shrub. In fertile soil, Chionoides Rhododendron doesn’t require any added fertilizers. However, in nutrient deficient soil, you can add fertilizers containing 10-8-6 concentrations to acidify the soil. If you have naturally acidic soil, be sure to use a complete, granular Rhododendron fertilizer.
Chionoides Rhododendron does not need deadheading, but it is important to prune immediately following bloom. Prune the Chionoides Rhododendron in late winter while it is still dormant. You can do this by cutting ½ an inch to ¾ of an inch above the dormant buds. Severe pruning might also be necessary in order to promote healthy, strong growth. This can be done by pruning 6 inches above the ground.
Chionoides Rhododendron Spacing
Because the Chionoides Rhododendron can grow up to 6 feet in width, these shrubs should be given about 4 feet in space from the center on both sides. This will give the proper amount of air circulation and room for the roots to grow. The shrub is pretty big once mature, and will only grow well in very large garden planters.
