The Cider Hill Japanese Maple or Acer palmatum 'Cider Hill' is a darling tree that is hardy and easy to grow. This cultivar hails from Vermont and can easily handle cold winter weather. The deeply lobed leaves transition to a stunning red hue by fall. This tree is easy to maintain, and once established, it does not require much care. Butterflies are drawn to this tree, while pests and diseases are rare.
A strong, central trunk and well-branched structure make the Cider Hill Japanese Maple a balanced, symmetrical tree that can visually anchor a landscape. The size is suitable for a front yard or a small space because it will not overwhelm the area. However, this tree can also work well as a focal point due to its attractive form and bold color. Plant several in a large landscape to create a spectacular fall display. The Cider Hill Japanese Maple grows in zones 4 through 8.
Cider Hill Japanese Maple Care
Plant the Cider Hill Japanese Maple in full sun to partial shade. The tree will develop more dramatic and colorful foliage in full sun but can handle some shade. The planting site should have moist and well-drained soil. The Cider Hill Japanese Maple has average water needs and should be watered regularly for the first year or two after planting. Established trees exhibit drought tolerance but need water during a dry spell. Fertilize each spring using an all-purpose plant food intended for trees.
Remove dead or damaged growth as it appears. Prune to shape the tree in late winter, just before the dormant period ends.
Young trees may need extra care for the first couple of winters, especially if planted in a windswept area. Use landscape fabric to create a windbreak; otherwise, the tree will not need additional winter care.
Cider Hill Japanese Maple Spacing
The Cider Hill Japanese Maple reaches 10 to 12 feet tall, and the canopy stretches 8 to 10 feet across. This tree is a good height for a medium-sized space, away from utility lines and at least 8 feet from a building. The dense canopy casts shade, creating an ideal spot for a ground cover that needs partial sun.
