Rhododendron atlanticum Coastal Azalea is a native to the United States eastern coastal plains. Its musky fragrant blooms appear before its medium green foliage appears in late spring. The blooms are white with a hint of blush pink and are trumpet shaped. Imagine walking down a shady woodland area with a glorious scent and beautiful flowers to appreciate – that’s what makes the Coastal Azalea so special! Known for its dwarf growth habit, its branches spread out more than they grow upwards. Typical sizes range from 2’-3’ tall and 4’-5’ wide.
Although deciduous, the Coastal Azalea will be a delight well before its leaves emerge. This shrub is best in border planting as it graces you with its beauty and fragrance! Once established in its ideal woodland environment, maintenance is relatively easy. Watering needs of the Coastal Azalea tend to wane as the roots spread out. This allows the shrub to supply most of its necessary water from rain. Enjoy this shrub by border planting, individual specimen planting, or group plantings within full shade or partial sun.
Coastal Azalea Plant Care
The Coastal Azalea thrives in woodland areas where it will receive partial sun (4 hours or less of sun each day). When you think about woodland areas, what comes to mind? Think of rich, humus-like soil and natural mulching from surrounding trees and plants. This is the ideal location for growing this gorgeous native.
If the soil is naturally rich, fertilizing may not need to occur. However, if the soil is compacted, this means that you will need to amend with humus or peat moss with aged compost to allow natural drainage. Create an equal mix of native soil and humus/peat moss and aged compost. If using peat moss to amend, it is recommended to add in an equal amount of aged compost for the nutrients. Ensure to plant the crown of the plant shallowly, so that the roots may emerge through the surface of the soil as it becomes established.
Check that the soil pH is within the acidic range (<7 pH). Amend as necessary with sulfur, leaf mold or compost.
After planting, watering should occur about twice a week for 6 weeks. This will allow ample time for the roots to establish and receive the needed water.
The growth habit of the Coastal Azalea is low lying, spreading branches. At times, pruning must be done to keep the branches out of walkways or other obstructions. You may choose to make shorter cuts to the branches that are in the way or you may want to prune to about 1” from the main branch. Other times to consider pruning would be when the shrub has dead or dying branches. Wait until dormancy and cut within 1” of the main branch.
Coastal Azalea Plant Spacing
To create a dense, yet healthy border, simply space each Coastal Azalea within 4’-5’ from the center of the shrubs. This will allow the shrubs to fill in nicely, while preventing low air flow that may cause diseases.
If you are planting the Coastal Azalea as an individual specimen, keep other shrubs, trees and flowers about 5’-6’ away from the center of it. This will allow plenty of space for all plants within the same area to grow without fighting for light or nutrients.
