Columbus Tulip Bulbs open with plush reddish-pink blooms edged in clean white, giving this peony tulip a romantic spring bouquet look. The large, fully double flowers stand on tall stems that reach about 20 inches, making the blooms easy to cut and display indoors. The rounded flower form is full and layered, closer in presence to a peony than a standard tulip. We find the pale edge shows most clearly when the bulbs are planted in generous groups instead of scattered one by one.

This double tulip is valued in cut flower production because the stems are sturdy and the blooms have a long-lasting, high-petal-count form. Columbus performs best in cold-winter regions, where fall-planted bulbs receive the extended chill period needed for spring flowering. Its raspberry-to-reddish pink coloring works especially well in formal beds, cutting rows, entry containers, and mixed bulb plantings with deeper purple or white spring flowers. The flowers may carry a light fragrance, and their full form benefits from a site protected from heavy rain and strong wind.

Columbus Tulip Bulbs Care

Plant Columbus Tulip Bulbs in full sun to partial shade, with at least a half day of direct sun for stronger stems and fuller flowering. Use well-drained soil, including amended clay, loam, or sandy soil, with an acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline pH. Plant in fall or early winter before the ground freezes, setting each bulb about 5 to 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward.

Water well right after planting so the soil settles around the bulbs. Once rooted, tulips prefer cool winter soil that is not soggy, so pause watering until growth appears. In spring, water when the soil begins to dry and rainfall is limited, but do not let bulbs sit in wet ground. Apply bulb fertilizer at planting or once yearly in fall, placed below the root zone rather than directly against the bulb.

Deadhead faded blooms so the plant does not spend energy on seed formation. Leave the foliage in place until it yellows and loosens naturally, since those leaves help replenish the bulb. Because Columbus is not a naturalizing tulip, many gardeners treat it as a premium annual display or lift and store bulbs dry after dormancy in wet-summer regions. Add about 2 inches of mulch after planting in colder zones to buffer soil temperature.

Columbus Tulip Bulbs Spacing

Space Columbus Tulip Bulbs about 5 inches apart, or plant 5 bulbs per square foot for a full bed display. In containers, use a pot at least 12 inches wide with drainage holes, and plant bulbs close together without letting them touch. Containers in zones with repeated freeze-thaw cycles need winter protection in an unheated garage, cold frame, or sheltered area.

For container planting, pair Columbus with nemesia and lobelia, which stay compact and enjoy the cool conditions tulips prefer in spring pots. In the landscape, barrenwort works well nearby in part shade because it covers ground without overwhelming the bulbs; speedwell can carry the planting into early summer after tulip foliage declines. For a bolder late-season handoff, use bluebeard behind the bulb planting so its summer growth fills space after the tulips finish.

Columbus Tulip Bulbs FAQs

1. What makes Columbus Tulips special?

These tulips feature full, double-petaled blooms in pink and white that resemble peonies. They add a luxurious, garden-show look to borders, beds, and cut flower arrangements.

2. When should I plant Columbus Tulip bulbs?

Plant in fall, typically September through November, before frost sets in. This allows bulbs to root over winter for a strong spring bloom.

3. How much sunlight do they need?

Columbus Tulips grow best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Aim for at least 6 hours of daily sun.

4. Can they be grown in pots?

Yes! They are excellent for containers. Just be sure to use well-draining soil and place pots where they receive plenty of sunlight.

5. How should I care for them after flowering?

Deadhead spent flowers to prevent seed formation, but leave the foliage until it naturally yellows. This helps the bulbs recharge for next year. Afterward, either leave them in the ground or lift and store them in a cool, dry place until replanting.
