Cora Louise Itoh Peony is prized for its oversized white flowers marked with deep lavender flares, giving it a quiet sophistication. It grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a broad, handsome mound. A strong stem structure supports the large semi-double flowers without staking unlike older herbaceous peonies. We have noticed this variety keeps its shape beautifully even when the plant is carrying a heavy set of blooms.
As an Itoh peony, 'Cora Louise' combines the lush foliage and flower size of tree peonies with the winter dieback and easier garden habit of herbaceous peonies. Mature plants can produce an impressive number of flowers over several weeks in late spring, and the lightly fragrant blooms are excellent for cutting. The dark green foliage stays full and attractive long after flowering, so it continues to anchor borders, foundation beds, and mixed perennial plantings through summer. This is a smart choice for gardeners who want a specimen-quality peony without the flopping and short-lived garden presence of older types.
Cora Louise Itoh Peony Care
Plant Cora Louise Itoh Peony in full or partial sun in fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Rich loam is ideal, though clay can work if drainage is improved before planting. Set the crown shallowly, with the eyes just below the soil surface, since planting too deep can reduce flowering.
Keep soil evenly moist while the plant is establishing, and water deeply during dry stretches rather than watering often and lightly. A yearly topdressing of compost is usually enough, although a single spring feeding can help in lean soils. This peony dies back in fall, so the stems and foliage should be cut down after frost.
Remove spent flowers as they fade to keep the plant looking tidy and to direct energy back into the roots and foliage. Avoid dividing unless needed, because Itoh peonies prefer to settle in and build strength over time. In the first winter after planting, a light mulch can help moderate soil temperature, but keep it away from the crown.
Cora Louise Itoh Peony Spacing
Space plants 3 to 4 feet apart so the broad clumps have room to mature and air can move freely around the foliage. For containers, use a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep, since peonies need root room and do not enjoy frequent disturbance. For landscape plantings, pair Cora Louise Itoh Peony with asters and weigela for a layered planting that extends interest well beyond peony season. In containers, pansies and alyssum make a good seasonal underplanting beneath the lush spring foliage.
