CrazyBlue Russian Sage, botanically known as Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘CrazyBlue’, is a delightfully colorful and compact variety of Russian Sage. Long-lasting, violet-blue flowers encase the sturdy spikes that rise above green-gray foliage in mid-summer. Its moderate height pairs well with taller perennials or ornamental grasses. This hardy perennial thrives in a variety of sunny spots, making it a low-maintenance choice for both borders and mass plantings.
CrazyBlue Russian Sage grows in Hardiness Zones 5-9, reaching a balanced size of 15-18 inches tall and wide. This versatile perennial is deer and rabbit resistant, and drought tolerant. Its upright, sturdy habit is a perfect tough-as-nails selection that stands up to high winds, strong downpours, and the hottest, driest weather. Pollinators are simply abuzz around Crazyblue Russian Sage. We like to use CrazyBlue Russian Sage to create soft drifts of color or to add interest along paths and fences.
CrazyBlue Russian Sage Care
Plant Russian Sage in an area that receives full sun, at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Select a site with average soil that has good drainage. Water CrazyBlue regularly the first season planted to get it off to a good start. As CrazyBlue Russian Sage reaches maturity, it develops drought tolerance. In drier climates, occasional watering during prolonged heat helps maintain a showy display of flowers. Fertilize it in the spring with a well-balanced, organic fertilizer.
No need to cut back the foliage before winter; allow Russian Sage to stay in the landscape because it increases its hardiness and adds form and texture when there is a light dusting of snow over the plant. Cut the plant back to approximately 8 inches from the soil in early spring. Trim off any spindly, crossing, or damaged twigs to promote sturdier healthy growth.
If grown in pots, choose a well-draining container mix and consider using clay or terracotta containers, which allow moisture to evaporate more readily. For winter, protect potted plants by moving them to a sheltered spot, though most in-ground plants tolerate cold conditions well. Container specimens may need top-up watering on milder winter days if soil becomes too dry.
CrazyBlue Russian Sage Spacing
Space CrazyBlue Russian Sage plants approximately 14 inches apart when used as a bedding plant or grown in mass drifts for a colorful, long-blooming display. If planting in a container, opt for a pot at least 12 inches wide so the sage can develop a healthy root structure.
