Veronicastrum virginicum 'Album', commonly known as Culver’s root, is a showy native with large benefits to wildlife. It lends a clean, vertical form in the garden that nicely contrasts shorter plants with coarse texture. In midsummer, tall wands of white flowers open from the bottom up and resemble candelabras. The blooms last for a month and are lovely in flower arrangements. The serrated leaves are arranged in whorls around the stems. This perennial is native to eastern North America and has been used in herbal medicine for generations.
Culver’s root has tall unbranched stems that reach up to 6 feet high. This perennial forms a clump of stems that spreads to 2 – 3 feet wide. It is quite cold hardy to zone 3 and adaptable to a wide range of conditions. It is not bothered by insect pests, and mammals tend to leave it alone. The flowers are visited by butterflies, a variety of bee populations, moths, wasps, and Syrphid flies. It looks right at home toward the back of a cottage garden or prairie, or at the edge of a woodland garden.
Culver’s Root Care
Culver's Root thrives in both full sun and light shade and tolerates a wide range of soils. It prefers rich loamy soil, but will tolerate sandy or clay conditions. It grows best in moist to average soil and should be watered regularly during hot weather. This perennial can be slow to establish, so give it time to grow a deep root system, and feed with rotted manure or well decomposed compost every spring.
Cut back spent flowers to extend the bloom time. You can also cut back the foliage after flowering to promote fresh growth.
Culver’s Root Spacing
When planting in groups, space each plant approximately 3 feet apart on center to allow the plant to reach its maximum spread. Plants positioned on slopes may need staking to prevent them from flopping.
