A staple of farm stands and kitchen counters, D’Anjou pears deliver buttery-smooth texture and a sweet flavor with a subtle citrus note. The fruit holds its green skin as it ripens, stores beautifully, and shines in everything from cheese boards to poached desserts.
Compact enough for most yards yet productive for decades, D’Anjou brings dependable crops, fragrant spring bloom, and handsome, glossy foliage to home orchards.
D’Anjou Pear Tree Care
Choose a full-sun site with well-drained loam and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Train young trees to a strong central leader and scaffold branches for good light penetration. Water deeply and consistently the first 1–2 seasons; later, irrigate during dry spells—especially from bloom through fruit swell.
Mulch 2–3 inches over the root zone (keep it off the trunk) to regulate moisture and temperature. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer if growth is modest. Prune in winter to remove crossing or upright water sprouts and to keep the canopy open; thin fruit after natural drop so pears are spaced 4–6 inches apart.
D’Anjou ripens best off the tree: harvest firm, mature green fruit and finish ripening at room temperature. Generally hardy in USDA Zones 5–9 with a medium to high chill requirement; good sanitation and airflow help limit fire blight.
D’Anjou Pear Tree Spacing
Spacing depends on rootstock: dwarf trees 8–10 ft apart, semi-dwarf 12–15 ft, and standard 16–20 ft, with rows 14–18 ft apart for access and airflow. As a single specimen near patios or fences, allow 8–10 ft of horizontal room so sunlight reaches all sides.
In large containers (20–24"+), grow one dwarf tree per pot with sturdy staking and attentive watering.
