D’Anjou Pear Tree provides a long-keeping harvest that gets better after picking. Pyrus communis 'D’Anjou' produces large, short-necked green pears with smooth white flesh, mild sweetness, and a buttery texture that works for fresh eating, baking, poaching, pear crisps, and storage. This cold-hardy tree matures about 8 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, making it easier to manage than a standard orchard pear. This fall pear stores longer than many soft summer pears and holds its shape well in the kitchen.
D’Anjou Pear Tree Care
Plant D’Anjou Pear Tree in late winter or early spring while dormant, or in fall in mild climates, spacing trees 12 to 16 feet apart. Position in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light, in well-drained loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0. This tree needs a compatible pear nearby for cross-pollination. Prune in winter to maintain one central leader, remove broken limbs, and improve airflow.
Growing D’Anjou Pear Tree
D’Anjou Pear Tree usually begins bearing in about 4 to 6 years, with fruit harvested firm in fall, roughly 150 to 180 days after spring bloom. It needs about 700 chill hours and grows best outdoors in zones 5 to 8 or 9, depending on local heat and disease pressure. Give it at least 12 feet of open growing room. Do not grow it indoors because pears need winter dormancy, full outdoor sun, and seasonal chill to fruit properly.
Growing D’Anjou Pear Tree in Containers
D’Anjou Pear Tree can be grown in a large container when kept pruned, though it is best suited to in-ground orchards and edible landscapes. Use a 25-gallon or larger pot with drainage holes, refresh the potting mix as it settles, and repot or root-prune when growth slows. Grow it as the main container tree with primrose or lettuce plants near the outer edge for seasonal interest.
Watering D’Anjou Pear Tree
Water deeply once a week during the first growing season, giving extra attention during hot, dry weather and fruit sizing. Established trees tolerate some dry spells, but curling leaves, small fruit, or early fruit drop mean the tree needs more consistent moisture.
Feeding D’Anjou Pear Tree
Feed D’Anjou Pear Tree in early spring with a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer before new growth begins. Avoid heavy fall feeding, since late growth can be damaged by cold and may reduce the tree’s winter readiness.
