Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia produces striking 3-inch double crimson blooms with neatly arranged rays fading in color from the centers outward. This dwarf variety reaches 12 to 16 inches and flowers from midsummer until autumn’s first heavy frost. Birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds will adore this perennial as much as you will.
If you enjoy making bouquets, Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia will delight you with showy “cut and come again” flowers from summer until fall. Cold hardy in zones 9-11, this dahlia originates from Mexico and parts of Central America. It has an upright, vigorous habit, and its lush emerald foliage is relatively disease and deer resistant. Add it to borders, beds or containers for instant color gratification.
Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia Care
Plant Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia in full sun in average, well-draining soil. The soil's pH should be 6.5 to 7.0. Improve poor, compact soil with compost or well-rotted manure. Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia requires about an inch of water per week and a low-nitrogen fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks during the flowering season. A low-nitrogen fertilizer will encourage more flower versus foliage production.
When maintaining this ornamental in a container, plant it in a general potting soil amended with peat moss. Water twice per week, providing about an inch of water. Apply a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer every two weeks during the summer and fall. To support bigger and better blooms, deadhead old and withered blossoms. Dahlias typically do not open after cutting, so when trimming for bouquets, wait until the flowers have opened fully.
Dalaya® Vampire Dahlia Spacing
Space plants 12 to 14 inches apart when creating an accent in borders and beds. Plant with companion plants such as cosmos, artemisia, and sneezeweed to create a gorgeous cottage garden. Select a pot at least 12 inches in diameter to provide focal interest to a patio, balcony, or entryway. Cut the flower stems and add to lavender, sweet alyssum, and lilies to create classy summer and early fall bouquets.
