Growing Zones
In late spring to early summer, the flower stalks of Dalmatian Creme Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmatian Creme’) rise to more than 3 feet high and are packed with trumpet-shaped buds. Like any foxglove, they make a stunning statement in the landscape, whether planted alone or in a garden bed grouping. Add to this that the flowers on Dalmation Creme sport deep reddish-purple spots inside a creamy white blossom and rich green leaves fill in below.
After marveling at the beauty and contrast of this perennial foxglove, you will be ready to cut some stalks to bring inside and enjoy all day. The plant thrives in zones 4 through 8 and comes back each year to start the flower power season anew. The tall vertical nature of this foxglove can serve as the focal point of a container or cottage garden or find its place at the back of nearly any natural or formal garden bed.
Dalmatian Creme Foxglove Care
Plant Dalmatian Creme Foxglove in full sun or partial shade (at least 4 hours of sun per day). A little more shade is preferred for warmer zones, especially on hot summer afternoons. Choose a spot with rich soil that drains well. Note that some parts of digitalis plants are toxic if eaten, and place it where pets and children will not be able to reach the flowers and leaves.
Water regularly during the growing season, but cut back when the weather cools so the plant can go into winter dormancy. And avoid soggy soil by watering about weekly unless the ground has been soaked by rain. After the flowers fade, deadhead the spent bloom, but leave the plant’s crown in the ground. The plant grows rapidly on its own, but you can add rose food during the growing season if preferred.
Dalmatian Creme Foxglove Spacing
The vertical growth habit of foxglove means height matters more than its 12- to 18-inch spread when placing them in a group or among other plants. Still, space the foxgloves about 18 inches apart if grouping to ensure they have room to fully grow and flower.
