Dear Dolores® Hydrangea offers repeat flowers so you don't have to wait all summer for the first big moment. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Wyatt LeFever' produces rounded mophead blooms that shift blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline soil. Bright green foliage gives the shrub a fresh, full look, and the 5-foot size is large enough to make a big statement. If you are looking for a blue hydrangea that starts early and keeps offering color later in the season, Dear Dolores® is an excellent choice.
This reblooming bigleaf hydrangea flowers on both old and new wood, which helps extend the show from spring into fall. Dear Dolores® Hydrangea has a fast growth rate, filling space quickly with its rounded habit. Plant it as a single accent near a shaded entry, repeat it along a curved bed, or use several together for a flowering screen with a relaxed shape. The blooms are perfect for fresh cuts and dried arrangements.
Dear Dolores Hydrangea Care
Plant Dear Dolores Hydrangea in part shade to shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade preferred in hot climates. Use rich, moist, well-drained soil, and avoid sites that stay soggy after rain. A soil pH below 6.0 encourages blue flowers, while neutral to alkaline soil tends to produce pink blooms, with lavender tones possible near the middle range.
Water newly planted hydrangeas deeply once or twice weekly through the first growing season, adjusting for rainfall and summer heat. Established plants need steady moisture during dry periods, especially when large leaves begin to curl or flower buds are forming. Fertilize in spring with a slow-release hydrangea or acid-loving shrub fertilizer, then let the plant harden naturally before winter. Mulch over the root zone with shredded bark or compost to cool the soil and protect shallow roots.
Prune lightly, since Dear Dolores blooms on both old and new growth. In spring, wait until leaf buds swell before removing dead or winter-damaged stems. Thin crowded canes at the base if the shrub gets too dense. Deadhead after the first bloom cycle to tidy the plant and divert energy toward later flowers, but avoid hard late-season cuts that remove developing buds.
Dear Dolores Hydrangea Spacing
Space Dear Dolores Hydrangea 4 to 5 feet apart for a filled-in hedge or mass planting. For individual shrubs, allow 6 to 7 feet so each plant can keep its rounded outline and airflow. In containers, use a pot at least 20 to 24 inches wide with drainage holes, and check soil moisture often because potted hydrangeas dry faster than in-ground plants.
Dear Dolores Hydrangea combines effortlessly with ferns, lungwort, and hellebores in shaded beds where steady moisture and filtered light suit all three. Mountain laurel and azaleas and rhododendron make good shrub partners in acidic soil, adding evergreen structure while the hydrangea is dormant. In a large container, let Dear Dolores be the anchor and use dead nettle or bacopa around the edge for lower color and texture that can handle similar moisture.
