Delphiniums are the epitome of a great Cottage Garden plant. They have large, dramatic blooms at top giant leaves that seem to keep multiplying all spring. Glitzy Bee is a new introduction in the ‘Delgenius’ Series of plants and does not disappoint. The spectacular blue flowers have bright white “bee” eyes and bloom well into summer long after other Delphiniums have withered from the heat.
Delphinium are deer and rabbit resistant, but slugs will make a feat of new growth. Using a physical barrier around the base of the plant such as crushed up eggshells or gritty sand will help keep the damage to a minimum. Placing Delphinium in a Cottage Garden as a specimen is the usual way to display it. A more modern approach would be to plant in a large group of one color or to grow exclusively in containers that can be part of a mixed seasonal display or highlighting a single plant per pot. Not only are the flowers good for floral displays, but the foliage makes great filler as well.
Delgenius™ Glitzy Bee Delphinium Care
Delphinium has a reputation for being very fussy and high maintenance. That may have been true for older varieties, but the ‘Delgenius’ series is as low maintenance as it gets for an ornamental perennial. Full sun and average soil will suit this long bloomer. Soil pH close to neutral is perfect. Well drained, but moist soil is the key to keeping these plants happy. Using soaker hoses or drip irrigation is the best way to provide extra irrigation.
Fertilizing with a well balanced, slow release food will ensure that you get plenty of flowers, but not too much weak foliage growth to entice the slugs and aphids. Staking of past varieties was always necessary. Glitzy Bee is much stouter growing and has stronger bloom stems. Light stalking of just the bloom may be needed. Early placement of the stake just as the buds open will take any extra weight off of the stem. Dividing every 3-4 years is recommended to maintain vigorous growth.
Delgenius™ Glitzy Bee Delphinium Spacing
Delphiniums are herbaceous perennials which die back completely to the ground in the winter. Spacing these plants can be much closer than spacing of a shrub or tree. The mature height and width of Glitzy Bee is 24 inches. A spacing of 18 inches will allow for proper air circulation around plants.
