Dubia Monstera is more commonly known by the name Shingle plant. The oversized leaves of this Monstera grow flat on the vine and, when trained to grow upright, overlap like roof shingles. The striking, deep-green leaves remain a solid medium green and have interesting vein patterns of deep green.
Best Locations For Growing Dubia Monstera
Monstera makes an impact in any room. The smaller size of the Shingle Monster makes it easy to fit into smaller spaces or offices. The vining habit of the shingle plant is best displayed along a vertical structure like a piece of wood or moss-covered pole. The epiphytic roots will need only a small amount of training to cling tightly to the base structure.
Dubia Monstera Sunlight Requirements
Indirect bright light from an east- or west-facing window will keep the vein markings dark. Lower light levels are acceptable to Shingle Plants, although eventually, the leaves may start to grow smaller when the light is too low. Artificial grow lights can be used for areas that do not have bright enough light.
Dubia Monstera Care
Use a loose potting soil with lots of nutrition. Monstera plants are epiphytic and grow on the bark of other trees and plants. Mix 1 part indoor potting soil with 1 part fine orchid bark to promote air circulation around the roots. Indoor temperatures between 60-80 degrees F are recommended, and placement near drafts or heating vents should be avoided. Extra humidity needs to be provided with a cool mist humidifier or a nearby tray of pebbles filled with water. If you choose to mist the leaves, make sure to use distilled water. Hard or other treated water will leave white spots on the leaves. Regular dusting of the large leaves keeps dirt and dust out of the air pores of Dubia Monstera.
Watering Dubia Monstera
Let the soil dry out in between waterings. The top 2-3 inches of soil should be dry. During rapid growth in the spring and summer, water approximately 1-2 times a week. When growth slows in the winter, watering can be cut back to once every two weeks as long as the humidity is high.
Feeding Dubia Monstera
Feeding can continue year-round for Dubia Monstera. A granular, slow-release fertilizer added to the soil's surface makes feeding easy. Choose a formula with a balanced ratio of NPK and apply once every four months. Liquid houseplant fertilizer can also be during watering once every month.
