Pink Flowering Almond, or Prunus Glandulosa, claim to fame is it’s stunning display of petite, pastel-pink blossoms. In the spring, this vigorous shrub will outperform its neighbors with hundreds of double-pink flowers attached to robust, brown stems. In late April, when the flowers open, your yard will ‘bee’ buzzing with excitement. This versatile plant was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson and planted all around his Monticello estate.
Small and compact, the Pink Flowering Almond is dense and has a multi-stemmed growth habit. It’s great for small spaces. Butterflies and honeybees adore these blooms as much as you will. After the flowers, shiny green foliage appears that turns a coppery-yellow in the fall. This magnificent plant can grow up to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, but does not produce edible fruit. This deciduous shrub is great to use in planters, in groups, and in pollinator gardens.
Dwarf Pink Flowering Almond Care
Flowering Almonds are adapted to a wide range of climates. They like to be in well-drained, medium-textured soil, where they will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Flowering almonds are somewhat drought tolerant but prefer moist soil throughout the season. Fertilize with a good tree and shrub fertilizer to maintain growth and flower production. Add 3 inches of mulch to protect the plant from moisture stress.
Pink Flowering Almonds should be pruned right after flowering to keep the plant-size in check. Remove a few of the oldest and thickest stems every year to ensure a good flower crop for the following year. Also remove any suckers to keep the plant tidy. If stored in a container make sure that the roots are covered in the winter to prevent damage to the plant.
