Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn covers itself in soft pink flower clusters while keeping evergreen structure in the landscape. Rhaphiolepis indica 'Conor' grows in a dense, rounded mound about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. New foliage often emerges red-orange before maturing to deep green, then shifts toward maroon tones in winter with blue-black berries that support wildlife. It is a good fit for sunny foundation beds because it offers flowers, foliage color, and a clean shape through the year.
This improved Indian hawthorn selection is noted for leaf-spot resistant foliage and a naturally compact habit. It flowers from mid-winter through spring in mild climates and may bloom again in fall. Once established, Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn tolerates heat, coastal exposure, dry soil, and moderate drought. Plant it as a low hedge, mass planting, border shrub, container accent, slope stabilizer, or evergreen foundation layer.
Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn Care
Plant Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn in full to partial sun, with morning sun useful for drying dew from the leaves. It grows best in average, well-drained soil that ranges from dry to somewhat moist. A slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 7.5 is suitable.
Water deeply after planting to settle the root ball and surrounding soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to keep the soil evenly moist. Established plants need less water and tolerate dry periods, but an occasional deep soak during prolonged summer drought helps maintain flowering and foliage quality. Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer. Avoid soggy soil, since wet root conditions can lead to decline.
Prune Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn after the main spring bloom if shaping is needed. Light selective trimming keeps the natural mound intact better than hard shearing. Remove dead, damaged, or crowded stems as they appear, and give plants enough spacing for airflow in humid climates.
Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn Spacing
Space Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn 4 feet apart for a solid low hedge or mass planting. Allow 6 to 8 feet between shrubs when using each plant as a separate rounded accent. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes, and water when the top 3 inches of potting mix feel dry.
For sunny coastal or foundation beds, plant Eleanor Taber Indian Hawthorn with rosemary and cotoneaster in well-drained soil and full to part sun. Loropetalum can add darker evergreen foliage and is compatible with the same part-sun to full-sun exposure. In containers, use lantana or calibrachoa around the rim for seasonal color in bright light.
