Elizabeth Magnolia (Magnolia ‘Elizabeth’) adds a remarkable glow to spring gardens with its large primrose-yellow flowers, each carrying a subtle lemon-like fragrance. The tulip-shaped blooms emerge in abundance before the leaves appear, giving the tree a brilliant display from top to bottom. Reaching around 20 to 30 feet in height and up to 20 feet wide, this deciduous hybrid develops a neatly pyramidal form that suits both formal and casual landscapes. Its robust green leaves then provide a lush backdrop through summer. This improved variety, introduced by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, stands out for the soft glow of its petals and its dependable spring performance.
Elizabeth Magnolia thrives in a wide range of climates (zones 5 to 8) and tolerates brief dry spells once established. It's less susceptible to common diseases, and deer typically leave it alone. Use it as a show-stopping specimen, line a pathway with multiples, or plant a few near patios for pleasant, lightly scented breezes on warm days. Its moderate growth rate also makes it fitting for gardens needing steady, manageable development. While it prefers full sun for best flowering, a touch of afternoon shade benefits this tree in hotter regions.
Elizabeth Magnolia Care
Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and position the tree so its topmost roots are just above ground level. Mix organic matter (compost or peat moss) into the backfill if your soil is poor or compacted. Water thoroughly once planted, then set up a regular schedule during the first growing season so the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. This magnolia appreciates acidic, loamy soil with good drainage. Fertilize in spring with a balanced, acid-forming product, and add a layer of mulch to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture.
Minimal pruning is needed apart from removing damaged or crossing branches. If shaping is desired, do so right after flowering to avoid cutting next year’s buds. Container-grown Elizabeth Magnolia may need slight thinning or a trim if branches outgrow the pot. In colder zones, water well before the ground freezes to help safeguard roots through winter.
Elizabeth Magnolia Spacing
For a hedge or row, provide at least 15 feet of room between each tree so their crowns have space to develop. In a more open design, leave 20 feet between trunks for a truly individual presence. If planting in a container, choose one about 20 inches wide to give the root system adequate room. Upgrade to a larger pot after a few years if you see signs of root-binding.
