Elpis™ Clematis delivers saturated red color in a vine that stays refreshingly compact. The rounded, deep magenta-red flowers have bright yellow anthers and hold their color from first flush through repeat bloom. Clematis ‘EviGsy154’ matures at just 3–4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide. Bred by Raymond Evison for strong foliage and reliable rebloom, it was named after the Greek spirit of hope and introduced in support of prostate cancer research initiatives.
The first heavy bloom arrives in late spring and early summer, followed by another show in late summer into early fall. Its compact, bushy habit makes it far easier to manage than larger climbers that overrun small structures. It climbs by leaf petioles, so it won’t overwhelm nearby plants or supports. Deer generally ignore it, and pollinators visit freely. This is a vine designed for patios, courtyards, and smaller vertical accents rather than sprawling fences.
Elpis™ Clematis Care
Plant Elpis™ in full sun to part shade, aiming for strong light on the foliage while keeping the root zone shaded. Use well-drained, organically enriched soil with a neutral pH; avoid heavy, waterlogged clay. Set the crown a few inches below soil level to encourage strong shoots from the base. Water thoroughly during establishment, then maintain consistent moisture during active growth, especially while buds are forming. Feed in early spring with a low-nitrogen fertilizer, and follow with a light balanced feeding about a month later if needed.
As a Group 3 clematis, Elpis™ should be pruned hard in late winter or early spring. Cut stems back to 6–12 inches above the soil to stimulate vigorous new growth and a full flush of flowers from the base upward.
Elpis™ Clematis Spacing
Space plants about 3 feet apart in landscape designs to allow airflow and branching room. For container planting, choose a pot at least 16 inches wide with a sturdy obelisk or compact trellis installed at planting time.
In garden beds, combine Elpis™ Clematis with roses for layered color contrast or anchor it between salvia and catmint for a structured midsummer display. In patio containers, underplant with bacopa for soft spill and add a trailing sweet potato vine to frame the base. We like to position it where you can see the details up close, because the contrast is striking at arm’s length.
