Etoile Rose Clematis (Clematis texensis ‘Etoile Rose’) captivates the garden with its nodding, 2-inch, tulip-shaped pink flowers that appear from mid-summer into early fall. Each petal showcases a soft silver edge, creating a two-tone effect against the deeper pink center. Growing 6 to 10 feet tall, this vigorous Texensis hybrid climbs fences, arches, or trellises with ease, adding memorable color just when other perennials begin to fade. Thanks to its profuse blooming and adaptable nature, Etoile Rose stands out for delivering a dramatic vertical display that hummingbirds and butterflies adore.
The bell-shaped flowers pair wonderfully with climbing roses or can be used as a charming groundcover when allowed to sprawl among shrubs. Native to regions of the southwestern United States, Texensis clematis generally thrives in full sun to partial shade, is modestly drought-tolerant once established, and can handle various well-drained soils. The vine’s graceful habit suits rock gardens, cottage landscapes, and container plantings. In areas with warmer summers, slight afternoon shade helps prevent the roots from overheating and extends the bloom period.
Etoile Rose Clematis Care
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil, burying the crown about 3 to 4 inches below surface level. This step helps protect dormant buds if the stems suffer damage. Aim for at least six hours of sunlight on the foliage, but allow the base of the plant some shade—using mulch or low-growing groundcovers can keep the roots cool. Water consistently during the first growing season, then adjust to moderate watering once established. A balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring promotes steady growth and abundant flowering.
In early spring, prune (Group 3) by cutting stems back to about 1 foot above the ground or to a pair of robust buds. Thinning or removing weak, tangled growth encourages fresh shoots for the coming season. Lightly removing spent flowers during the season can also encourage a longer bloom window. If growing in containers, consider a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide, and insulate the roots during harsh winters to prevent damage. Consider moving the pot to a sheltered spot or wrapping it in insulating material.
Etoile Rose Clematis Spacing
Space plants 3 to 4 feet apart along fences or trellises to accommodate their climbing habit. When grown as a single focal point, leave enough clearance for the vines to sprawl without interference. For container planting, choose a sturdy pot of at least 14 to 16 inches in diameter to allow healthy root development and long-term vigor.
