A tough hardy perennial with a soft, feminine look...that’s what you will get with this newest color of yarrow for your garden. Beautiful clusters of lavender pink flowers billow out from sturdy upright stems on this long blooming old fashioned flower, making this an ideal cutting flower. Bonus, the flowers age out to a light pink before they are done. Line your walkway with these, or add them to your cottage garden for old fashioned appeal. You are going to like this perennial flower!

Native to North America, Europe and Asia, yarrows grow in Zones 3-8, making this one of the most prolific perennials for all but the hottest summer regions of the United States. Traditionally available in white and yellow, recent cultivars have introduced red tones to this garden standby, and now we have lavender pink! Coastal gardeners will appreciate the salt tolerance of this lovely plant as well as the drought tolerance and resistance to deer and rabbit damage. Northern gardeners will appreciate its ability to withstand cold winters, and all gardeners will appreciate that it does not produce viable seed and spread everywhere.

Firefly Amethyst Yarrow Care

Care and maintenance of this tough perennial flower is easy as it is tolerant to all soil types except rich soil. It tolerates a wide pH range as well, a whopping 4.0 to 8.0, acidic to alkaline, making this easy to plant just about anywhere in your landscape. It does prefer full sun and will bloom in the summer after it is established. Fertilizing is not required, in fact, you will be very disappointed if you do fertilize as the plants will become limp and leggy and will not stand up. Water to establish when first planted, and then only in extremely dry periods. Apply a good quality mulch to help preserve moisture if you are xeriscaping in your landscape. This pretty perennial will survive higher elevations, up to 7000 ft above sea level, as well.

Deadheading can be done to prolong the bloom season, but when blooms are done for the summer, you will want to cut your plant down by ½ so that it focuses its energy on root development. You may divide your clump in mid spring if it has outgrown the spot you placed it in, or if the center of the clump has died out. This will give you additional plants and renew the health of the root ball. You should not need to protect this plant for the winter as it is extremely hardy, surviving temperatures well below zero and sprouting back to life in the spring.

Firefly Amethyst Yarrow Spacing

Growing up to 22 inches tall and 36 inches wide, you will want to give this plant 32 to 36 inches of space in between. It is highly resistant to plant diseases and few insects will bother it. Mass it out in your landscape for a dramatic color show, or keep it in containers on your porch or patio for your enjoyment. Bees and butterflies are attracted to the nectar of this beautiful flower. It makes a great cutting flower as well as a dried flower for indoor arrangements.
