The Chaste Tree is a wonderful beneficial pollinator attractor in the warmer hardiness zones of 7-9. They typically reach heights of 15 feet or more. The Flip Side Chaste Tree gives you all of the great attributes of this native in a much smaller, manageable size. Not only does Flip Side have the expected 8 inch flower spikes that last long into the summer, but the foliage is a real treat. The olive green foliage has a deep purple color on the back. The color really becomes obvious when the leaves are hit with a light breeze.

Native bees and butterflies are drawn to the nectar the whole time this beauty is in bloom. The berries that form later are used by birds and other small animals through the fall and winter. This variety of Chaste Tree is a great replacement for Butterfly (Buddleia) bush in areas where they are invasive. A Flip Side Chaste Tree can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained into a small standard tree. Either way, the Flip Side Chaste Tree is a great plant for the smaller garden or container growing.

Flip Side® Chastetree Care

The Flip Side Chaste Tree is very easy to grow. It likes to be in full sun. Average soil texture and a neutral pH are acceptable. Well-drained, moist soil is preferred, but Chaste Tree will be more drought resistant after it has been well established.

Flip Side® Chaste Tree is a much slower growing variety than its native relative. Pruning is only needed in the early spring to cut out any dead, dying, diseased or diagonal branches. A quick deadheading of spent blooms in the summer will cut down on any berry formation. This might be a good practice if the shrub is along a walkway or driveway where the falling berries could make a mess.

Flip Side® Chastetree Spacing

Flip Side® Chaster Tree makes a great specimen plant in a garden or container. The overall height is a manageable 6-8 feet with a width of 8-10 feet. When planting in the garden, a spacing of 8 feet on center will provide for good air circulation and plenty of room for the shrub to flower profusely. Growing Flip Side® Chastrees in a container as a standard tree will make for a great basis for a changing seasonal planting. Using a pot that is at least 8 inches larger than the rootball size and is also low to the ground will give them a great home for at least 2-3 before needing to go up a pot size. Chaste Trees can even be brought indoors for growing through the winter outside of its hardiness zones.
