Francee is unquestionably the quintessential Hosta that comes to mind when you think of a shady garden. Great mounds of dark green foliage edged in white and masses of blooms late in the summer that stand tall above the leaves. Francee can’t be beat. The lavender flowers are magnets for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
Francee is useful as a foundation plant, as an addition to the cottage garden or used as a ground cover planted between broadleaf evergreens. Container growing this Hosta will give it a more modern feel. The structure of the large leaves can be viewed up close, placed in a pot on a front step or along a pathway.
Francee Hosta Care
Hosta thrive in a damp, shady woodland setting. Well drained soil is necessary to keep the roots healthy, as Hosta does not like to stand in waterlogged soil. A soil pH of acidic to neutral is acceptable. Average loam soil that is well mulched in the fall is ideal.
Francee Hosta only needs minimal upkeep. A quick removal of dead foliage in the late fall will help to keep the crown from rotting in the winter. A feed of slow release fertilizer in the spring as the new foliage appears. Dividing of Hostas is needed every 3-4 years. This ensures that the plants remain vigorous growers. Mulching with organic compost or leaves after transplanting will guarantee that the new plants will survive the winter.
Francee Hosta Spacing
France Hosta is considered one of the medium sized Hostas. Height of 21 -24 inches and width of 30-36 inches. Planting multiple Hostas of the same variety can be very impactful. Spacing them 30 inches on center will ensure that there is plenty of air circulation between plants. When container growing Francee, a pot with a diameter of at least 16 inches should be used.
