Funky Fuchsia Dianthus is one of a collection in the Fruit Punch® series of perennials that gives a punch of color to any garden border or container planting. Funky Fuchsia, also known by the common name of Garden Pinks, has fully double flowers that are fragrant, sturdy, and exceptionally early blooming in the spring. The glaucous green foliage and stems are semi-evergreen in most USDA hardiness zones, while the flowers attract early native pollinators to the garden.

Fruit Punch® Dianthus are heat, salt and wind tolerant. They have uniform, florist-quality stems that last a long time in the vase. Deer do not often browse Dianthus, and few diseases attack these exceptionally hardy plants. Dianthus's spicy, sweet scent makes them a favorite for planting in sensory gardens or near a patio. Funky Fuchsia will spread moderately and looks great as a groundcover in an early spring bulb garden.

Fruit Punch® Funky Fuchsia Dianthus Care

Plant Dianthus in full sun to part shade in well-draining soil. Average texture and a neutral to alkaline soil pH is preferred. Spring transplanting will require watering throughout the first summer for the plants to establish well. Supplemental watering is rarely needed after the first 1-2 years when planted in the garden. Container-grown Dianthus will require watering when 1-2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Daily watering may be needed during the hottest part of the summer. Fertilize Dianthus with a slow-release granular feed formulated for flowering plants and roses. Look for an NPK ratio of 1-4-2, supporting heavy blooming and root growth.

Dianthus require next to no maintenance but benefit from deadheading once a week while in bloom. This clean-up encourages the plant to continue forming flowers instead of setting seeds. Fertilize the plants early in the spring as new growth emerges. Scratch a granular fertilizer into the top 1-2 inches of soil over the root zone to provide nutrition all season long. After the first flush of blooms, Dianthus can be cut back to within 6 inches of the soil. This encourages the plant to regrow vigorously and often results in another round of flowers later in the summer. Container-grown Dianthus will need fertilizing with a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month from April to September.

Fruit Punch® Funky Fuchsia Dianthus Spacing

Funky Fuchsia Dianthus is a petite perennial that reaches a mature height of 8-10 inches and spreads 14-16 inches. Plant Dianthus in a container with at least an 8-inch diameter. Space each plant 12 inches apart on the center when planting in multiples.
