Growing Zones
Small in stature, big in flavor. Fukushu sets glossy, bell-to-oval kumquats with a notably sweet, thick rind and tangy pulp—the whole fruit is eaten peel and all. The compact, rounded canopy, fragrant spring bloom, and clusters of glowing orange fruit bring four-season charm to patios, balconies, and bright interiors, making this an ideal citrus for containers and small gardens.
Fukushu Kumquat Tree Care
Give full sun (6–8+ hours) for best flowering and fruiting; in very hot climates, light afternoon shade keeps leaves pristine. Plant in fast-draining, slightly acidic soil (target pH ~6.0–6.5). For containers, use a chunky citrus mix in a pot with large drain holes. Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry—steady moisture during bloom and fruit fill is key, but avoid waterlogged roots.
Feed from early spring through midsummer with a citrus fertilizer that includes micronutrients (iron, magnesium, manganese). After harvest, lightly thin and shape to open the canopy and remove crossing growth; take off any suckers below the graft union.
Outdoors, it’s best suited to USDA Zones 9–11; in cooler zones, grow in a rolling container and overwinter in a bright, cool room (about 50–60°F). Generally self-fruitful; a breeze or visiting pollinators can boost set.
Fukushu Kumquat Tree Spacing
In the landscape, expect about 6–8 ft tall by 5–7 ft wide; space trees 6–8 ft apart for airflow and light, and keep 3–5 ft from walls or paths.
For container culture, start with a sturdy 16–20"+ diameter pot; place planters 2–3 ft apart so sunlight reaches all sides and harvesting is easy.
