Late summer and fall blooming Anemones do a great job of taking over for the early summer perennials. They provide continued color and nectar for beneficial pollinators as they prepare to go into winter hibernation. Grape Leaf Anemone is a compact but spreading perennial with dainty, pink blooms that float above dark-green sturdy foliage. Anemone tomentosa ‘Robustissima’ has flowers as long-lived in the vase as in the garden.
Grape Leaf Anemone is a reasonably quick grower that will carpet a woodland garden or naturalize in a sunny meadow planting. Unlike taller cultivars of Japanese Anemone, Grape Leaf does not require staking after flowering and tolerates late summer and fall rain well. The fuzzy seedheads add structural interest to the garden.
Grape Leaf Anemone Care
Anemone grows well in either full sun or part shade and is not fussy about soil texture or pH. Heavier clay soils should be amended to improve drainage, especially in winter. Applying 2-3 inches of organic compost in the spring will help to loosen soils and provide nutrients to the plant over time. Water new plants regularly for the first 1-2 years to support a robust root system. Once established, Anemone is very drought tolerant, only needing supplemental watering during the hottest part of the summer. Pinching out of the top growth is optional to encourage Grape Leaf Anemone to grow bushier. Deadheading will coax the plant to flower longer in the fall, sometimes up until the first frost.
Cut back the spent top growth early in the spring. The seedheads and foliage provide winter cover and nutrition for local wildlife and non-migrating birds. Divide Grape Leaf Anemone every 3-4 years to keep growth vigorous and healthy. The compact size makes it perfect for smaller gardens. Mix it with other seasonal annuals and perennials, or grow it singly as part of a container garden.
Grape Leaf Anemone Spacing
Grape Leaf Anemone reaches a mature height and spread of 2-3 feet. Space plants 2 feet apart on the center when planting multiples in the garden. Choose a pot with at least a 10-inch diameter when growing alone in a container.
