Growing Zones
Green Wheel Hens & Chicks features a lovely geometric rosette of bluish-green succulent leaves. With time, this succulent will spread and saturate an area with its unique color. Also known as Sempervivum x hybrida 'Green Wheel', this showy evergreen provides year-round interest. The flower spike attracts bees and butterflies, supporting the environment.
Native to Europe, Green Wheel is cold hardy in zones 4-9. As a compact hybrid, this showy succulent is easy to care for and low maintenance. Add this deer- and rabbit-resistant selection to ground covers, borders, and crevices; this perennial will remain untouched long after the critters have scampered by. With its manageable size, it’s a great option to plant in alpine and rock gardens and containers such as a tiered strawberry planter.
Green Wheel Hens & Chicks Care
Plant hens and chicks during spring in full sun. This succulent is susceptible to fungal diseases such as crown rot, so soggy soil should be avoided. Amend poorly draining soil with grit or pumice. Do not water unless the soil’s top layer is dry. This succulent is not a heavy feeder and does not require fertilizer in average garden soil. For potted plants, apply an organic fertilizer at half the recommended strength annually.
Besides occasionally removing a dead or damaged leaf, Green Wheel Hens & Chicks does not typically require pruning. The central rosette, or “hen”, produces a flower stalk in summer and will expire shortly after. The hen and its blooms can be removed as they die back. Its offsets called “chicks” will continue to grow and can be transplanted to different areas of the garden if desired.
To grow Green Wheel in a container, select a pot a few inches larger than the old one when you notice the plant has no more room to grow. The chicks can be planted in individual pots to expand your collection.
Green Wheel Hens & Chicks Spacing
Space each plant 10 to 12 inches apart. Use these striking succulents to fill in crevices or rooftop gardens. Plant in containers with other cold-hardy succulents, including stonecrop, yucca, agave, ice plant, and prickly pear cactus.
