Want to create a bright border between your backyard and adjacent woods? Or hoping to make your front yard a little more interesting? ‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea can do both. Lush, 14-inch bunches of showy, pearl-white blooms surrounding delicate bundles of petite, white flowers brilliantly shine from June until October. Broad, basil-green leaves provide additional color and texture from spring until fall. Reaching a maximum height and spread of 3 to 5 feet, butterflies, songbirds, and hummingbirds will call this shrub their home away from home every spring. ‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea, otherwise known as Hydrangea arborescens 'Haas' Halo', is also highly desired by florists and farmer’s markets alike. This perennial shrub produces cut-flower quality blooms that make striking bouquets whether alone or mixed with other florals such as delphiniums, daisies, roses, and peonies.
‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea, a United States native, possesses an upright growing habit. It also is humidity tolerant. Having a low-maintenance regimen, this deciduous perennial poses minimal worry. Even if you are often busy, you should have no trouble getting this showstopper to produce its quality blooms.
‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea Care
‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea tolerates full sun to partial shade; however, to thrive, choose a spot with partial shade. An east-facing spot that gets morning sunshine and afternoon shade is preferable. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball’s height and twice as wide as the root ball’s width. Then, plant this humidity-tolerant perennial in moist, neutral soil with a pH falling somewhere between 6.6 to 7.3. Producing showy blooms all summer long, this shrub adores moisture. Wilting leaves is a sure sign of insufficient watering. A good watering regimen is three times each week with a total of 1-2 inches of water. A low-maintenance plant, ‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea requires minimal fertilizing. Apply a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer two times annually, once during the spring and another time during the fall.
During the blooming season, deadhead spent flowers to encourage growth and the production of more vibrant blooms. When deadheading this lovely shrub, run your fingers down the stem and cut just above the first set of true leaves. If gathering cut flowers, however, make your cut farther down the stem but above a node. Prune once per year after the blooming season has ended at the end of summer.
‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea Spacing
‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea produce a dramatic effect whether planted as a group, in a hedge, or as a specimen in a garden. Space these perennials 4 to 6 feet apart, measured from the center of one shrub to another. Also, producing shade as it grows larger, ‘Haas’ Halo Hydrangea works well with other shade-loving plants such as hostas and ferns.
