Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs make summer cutting gardens stand taller with red flowers marked by crisp white striping. Gladiolus 'Helvetia' grows 36 to 48 inches tall, sending up upright stems that add clean vertical color to sunny beds and bouquets. The bicolor pattern gives each spike more definition than a solid red glad. Our landscapers often place this one where it can be cut from the side of a border without disturbing lower summer flowers.

This spring-planted gladiolus grows from corms and blooms in mid-summer, usually about 60 to 90 days after planting depending on weather and soil warmth. Gladiolus are perennial in zones 8 to 10, while gardeners in colder zones can lift and store the corms before winter. The tall stems attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and deer usually avoid them. Use Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs in cutting rows, sunny borders, narrow fence-line beds, or clustered among lower perennials that leave room for the flower spikes.

Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs Care

Plant Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs in full sun with 6 to 8 hours of direct light for strong stems and good flower color. Use well-drained soil, including loam, sandy soil, or improved clay that drains freely after rain. A slightly acidic to neutral pH, about 6.0 to 7.0, is a good range for gladiolus corms.

Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist once shoots are growing. During dry summer weather, give a deep soak rather than light daily watering. Feed when buds begin forming with a balanced or bloom-supporting fertilizer according to the label. Mulch lightly after the soil warms to help conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

Cut stems in the morning when the lowest florets begin to open, leaving several leaves on the plant to rebuild the corm. Remove spent flower stalks after bloom if they are not harvested. Tall stems may need staking in windy sites, and corms should be lifted in zones 3 to 7 after frost, dried, and stored in a cool frost-free place.

Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs Spacing

Plant Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and 9 to 12 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. For a longer bloom season, plant small batches every 1 to 2 weeks from spring into early summer. In containers, use a deep pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and place it where the tall stems have shelter from strong wind.

For container companions, pair Helvetia Gladiolus Bulbs with lantana, verbena, or fan flower to cover the base while keeping the vertical stems visible. In garden beds, tickseed and blanket flowers share the same sunny conditions and keep color near the lower part of the planting. Red hot poker adds another upright form nearby, while fountain grass gives movement and helps the gladiolus spikes feel settled in a mixed summer border.
