High Society Hosta (Hosta ‘High Society’) displays distinctive blue-green margins that frame creamy yellow centers, creating a striking contrast on each leaf. The color tones shift toward a soft white interior later in the summer, giving the plant a dynamic look. It remains fairly petite at about 8 inches tall with a compact spread of around 15 inches, making it an excellent choice for tight spaces or container displays. Its refined foliage and subtle pinkish-white blooms late in the season make it an excellent choice for a shady corner.
High Society has a tidy mounding habit that suits shady borders or woodland gardens where bold leaf patterns shine. This perennial, developed from a sport of ‘June’, has moderate drought tolerance once established, though it appreciates consistent moisture. Deer often browse other plants first, while slugs can be kept at bay with early season controls. City gardeners enjoy its adaptability, using it in containers or mass plantings to lend calm texture to urban spots.
High Society Hosta Care
Plant it in partial to full shade with a well-draining, organic-rich soil. Aim for a pH between mildly acidic and neutral, providing occasional compost or aged manure for nutrition. Water regularly, especially during heat waves, to maintain attractive foliage, and consider a balanced fertilizer in spring or early summer. Morning sun can help intensify the leaf colors, but harsh afternoon rays may scorch the leaves.
Remove spent flower scapes to keep it neat, and trim any damaged foliage at the end of the growing season. Apply a layer of mulch if you expect harsh winters, though mulch makes a good hiding spot for slugs in the spring. Container-grown plants thrive in high-quality potting mix, requiring consistent water and some shade for best results. Bring potted hostas into sheltered locations if extreme cold threatens, or simply ensure they have suitable insulation from harsh winter wind.
High Society Hosta Spacing
Space individual plants 15 to 18 inches apart in rows or clusters, allowing enough room for their slow but steady spread. Slightly tighter spacing creates a dense groundcover but may require dividing sooner if they become too crowded. For container planting, a pot at least 10 inches wide and deep helps accommodate root growth.
