A heat-tolerant annual with vibrant purple blossoms, Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia brightens up gardens in summer and fall. With its large flower spikes and dense foliage, Celosia spicata as it is also known is a versatile and low-maintenance plant that will attract pollinators to your yard. This long-blooming annual produces masses of spiky flower plumes held above attractive foliage. The flowers are a deep magenta to violet in color, contrasting with the dark green ovate leaves.
Growing 12-18” tall, Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Cockscomb’s upright flowers make it a great companion for more compact, mounded plants. Use this annual for textural and vertical interest in mixed borders, or as a thriller in containers. Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia is ideal for late summer and fall plantings mixed with colorful annuals and perennials. As a bonus, its flowers can be harvested for cut and dried flowers.
Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia Care
Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia must be planted in full sun. Grow this annual in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil amended with organic matter. Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia is drought tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering, especially when grown in containers. Fertilize this plant once per month with a general-purpose fertilizer. Pinching back young plants to a few sets of leaves can encourage a bushier habit with more blooms. To extend flower production, deadhead often by snipping off flowers as soon as they start to turn brown.
Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia is a perennial in zones 10-11. This plant grows best in hot temperatures and reliably grows and blooms until frost. Although best grown outdoors in warm temperatures, cockscomb may sometimes be successfully overwintered indoors near a south-facing window.
Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia Spacing
Kelos® Fire Atomic Violet Celosia grows 12-15” wide at maturity. Space them 10-12” apart from other plants for a full, lush planting. Celosias can be grown in a variety of container sizes, as they will often grow to be more compact in pots. Choose a pot at least 12-16” in diameter for mixed plantings.
