Are you looking for something to brighten your spring garden with unique elegance and showy textured flowers? Then look no further because Ken Janeck Rhododendron can do that and more! This smaller, spring-blooming perennial has exquisite white flowers bordered with multi-stemmed, pale pink flowers, highlighted by leathery, dark green foliage with a thick underlayer of fawn indumentum. This outstanding performer is a multiple-time Rhododendron of the Year award winner and has won many other awards, including the 2002 Cary Award.
Hardy in zones 5-8, this upright, dense evergreen has a low spreading habit and is perfect for borders and beds. Unlike other rhododendrons, Ken Janeck needs no deadheading and is incredibly low maintenance! You can highlight the unique blooms in a small garden or container or plant this shrub in groupings to make a big impact! Its height and spread make it perfect for a half-wall garden border or privacy screen. It also attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, bringing an aura of life into your space.
Ken Janeck Rhododendron Care
This adaptable plant can grow in either full sun or partial shade in an area with sufficient wind protection. Grow it in well-draining soil, rich in organic matter, and with an acidic pH of 5.0 to 5.5. It is essential to note that this plant is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, so be careful where you choose to plant it. During the first growing season, water regularly, at least twice a week, and then weekly once established, to promote a deep and healthy root system. After the first bloom, feed it with a fertilizer for acid lovers and mulch to keep the root system cool during the summer. In the fall, provide it with a fertilizer formulated for rhododendrons and azaleas. Take care to only fertilize before the end of autumn, as fertilizing afterward can result in spindly growth the following spring.
Remove any spent or dead flowers at the end of the spring blooming season to ensure the number of flowers will remain the same during the following season. If you notice any dead or diseased branches, prune them off at any time except in the winter. If the shrub grows past its designated area, trim it back to a more compact form.
Ken Janeck Rhododendron Spacing
This rhododendron has a mature height of 2-3 feet and a mature spread of 3-4 feet. Therefore, when planting multiples, space them 4 feet away from each other. If planting in a container, choose a large container with plenty of drainage holes and loose, well-draining soil, and place it in a spot protected from extreme heat.
