Rose bushes are perceived to be the most difficult of plants to grow. That may be true with Hybris Tea Types that act like the divas of the garden, but Rugosa types like Lotty’s Love™ These roses are the absolute definition of low to no maintenance. Lotty’s Love™ Rose has stunning 4inch semi-double blooms of the most shocking magenta. The fragrance that this rose has is an intense spicy herbal scent that attracts loads of native pollinators to your garden.
Rugosa type Roses have virtually no pests or diseases and will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. The blooms will continue all summer long with no need to deadhead or cut back branches. The fruit that is produced after the blooms are spent is gorgeous and long lasting on the bush. Bright orange-red colored hips the size of cherries persist through the winter to provide high quality nutrition for any non-migrating birds.
Lotty’s Love™ Rose Care
Roses will grow and bloom best in full sun. Shade either in early morning or late in the afternoon is acceptable, especially in the hotter hardiness zones. Average soil texture and fertility with excellent drainage is the perfect spot to plant these deciduous shrubs.
Annual maintenance is very easy and straightforward. Prune out any diseased or dying branches early in the spring as the new foliage emerges. Suckers will sprout up around the base of this rose. Lotty’s Love™ Rose is grown on its own rootstock which is how it also multiplies. The suckers can be cut out beneath ground level at any time during the year to keep the shrub growing just where you want it to. Water Lotty’s Love™ consistently and well during the first 2-3 years to make sure that it establishes well and at maturity this rose will be very drought tolerant.
Lotty’s Love™ Rose Spacing
Shrub Roses look best when planted in large groups and as low growing informal hedges. Lotty’s Love™ Rose is a compact 3-4 feet tall and wide at maturity. Space plants at 3 feet on center to form a quick growing dense hedge.
