A North American native that thrives from zones 9-3, Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry) is tough, durable, and functional in landscapes of all kinds. Low Scape Mound is a favorite Aronia variety because it has a low-growing, tidy mounded growth habit that can be utilized as a ground cover or edging plant. In the spring, it is covered in frothy white flowers that attract bees and butterflies. The glossy green foliage turns a brilliant red in the fall, which adds visual interest to your autumnal landscape.
As the flowers fade in late spring, dark purple berries start to grow in abundance. While the berries can have an astringent taste when eaten fresh (hence the name), they do have a variety of health benefits and are safe to eat. They are delicious when made into jams and jellies. Birds also love Aronia berries, and will be grateful for the food source and durable shelter provided by these lovely shrubs. Low Scape Mound Aronia shrub is happy in just about any North American garden. It is heat-, drought- and salt-tolerant, and tolerant of wet, boggy soils. Deer tend to leave them alone unless they have nothing else to eat.
Low Scape Mound® Aronia Care
Aronia shrubs enjoy sunny locations, so planting it in a location that gets at least four hours of sunlight is a must. Low Scape Mound tolerates a wide range of growing conditions, and can thrive in clay, loam, sand soil types, as well as either wet or dry conditions. They do not require regular irrigation after the initial growing season, unless you are facing extremely dry conditions. Plant Aronia with a balanced fertilizer and/or an application of top dressing. Regular fertilizing is not necessary.
Aronia is a tidy plant that does not typically require pruning. However, if you would like to prune or shape it, do so after it flowers. Keep in mind that pruning at this time will decrease the amount of berries it produces. Similarly, deadheading is discouraged to allow berries to form.
Low Scape Mound® Aronia Spacing
Low Scape Mound is a low-growing Aronia variety that does not spread much more than two feet. Allow 18-26” of space between plants. In order to create a mass planting or consistent border, plant them 18-22” apart. If you’d like them to maintain distance from each other or other plants, opt for 22-26” of space between plants.
