- Use As A Thriller In Containers
Luminary® Prismatic Pink has a wonderful scent and full appearance in the garden. This variety will also be one of the lowest maintenance plants in your garden. The extra large and fluffy sprays of bright pink flowers endure over the summer. With simple deadheading, Prismatic Pink Tall Garden Phlox continues to bloom until the first frost in fall.
Traditional garden Phlox is notorious for being susceptible to both mildew and fungal diseases. The Luminary® collection has great disease resistance and is not bothered by heavy rains or winds. The spicy fragrance of Phlox paniculata makes this plant a must-have for garden beds near outdoor seating areas or under open windows.
Prismatic Pink Phlox is a mid-sized perennial that works well at the middle and back of a garden bed. Alternatively, it works as a filler when planted with other seasonal color plants in a container for a patio, deck, or front entryway. The cut flowers are long-lasting in a vase and make a lovely filler for bouquets containing roses, hydrangeas, and other traditional garden favorites.
Luminary® Prismatic Pink Tall Garden Phlox Care
Phlox flowers best in at least 6 hours of direct sun exposure. Gardeners in the warmer gardening zones (6-8) can plant Phlox in a shadier location as long as the plant receives ample sun either early or late in the day. This plant prefers well-draining garden soil that is slightly acidic to neutral in pH. In containers, use an all-purpose potting mix that has added perlite for drainage and moisture retention.
Phlox prefers moderately fertile soil and responds to a twice-yearly feeding to support superior flowering. Use a diluted, liquid fertilizer formulated for flowering perennials, and apply it as new growth emerges and additionally as the first flower buds form. Mulching with organic compost or finely shredded arborist chips helps suppress seasonal weed growth while enriching the soil and increasing moisture retention. Regular watering is needed even into the fall to support heavy blooming and good root establishment.
Expect the first flush of blooms early in the summer. To encourage another flush, cut back the plants by half. This shearing encourages dense stem growth and new flower bud development. The plant’s top growth will fade in late fall and can be removed either after a hard freeze or in early spring when new growth appears. Divide plants every 2-3 years to rejuvenate clumps. Divisions can be replanted in the garden, or grown in a pot.
Luminary® Prismatic Pink Tall Garden Phlox Spacing
Space Phlox plants so that they have good air circulation. Even though the Luminary® line has increased resistance to powdery mildew, the plants should be positioned 24 inches apart to allow room for growth. When growing Prismatic Pink in a pot, choose a container that has plenty of drainage holes in the bottom and a diameter of at least 12 inches.
